UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – In their final regular season competition of the season, the D'Youville University women's wrestling team had a strong showing at the John Carroll Open, having seven wrestlers place on the day.
Madison Wellen (East Berlin, Pa./Wyoming Seminary),
Alessandra Elliott (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville), and
Saniyah Ward (The Colony, Texas/The Colony) each took away first-place finishes with
Mackenzie Laforest (Waverly, N.Y./Waverly) taking home second-place.
Alexis Brua (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) and
Riley Wentlent (Cheektowaga, N.Y./Depew) each place third in their respective weight classes with
Ollie Ridling (San Antonio, Texas/Winston Churchill) placing sixth.
Wellen breezed into the first-place match, picking up a pair of falls in a combined 50 seconds between the matches. In the finals, Wellen earned a 12-1 tech. fall over Trinity Davis of Lindsey Wilson to finish 3-0 on the day. Elliott went a perfect 4-0 on the day, getting all tech. falls. Elliott's only match in which she gave up points came in the final, winning 13-3 against Gianna Amendola of East Stroudsburg. Ward had a bit tougher path to a first-place finish, getting a decision, tech. fall, and a fall over Jadah Otto of Revolution to go 3-0.
LaForest went 2-1 on the day, first grinding out a 7-4 win in the first round. After a lost in the second round, LaForest bounced back with a fall of her own over Ja'Khia Matthews of Waynesburg. Brua went 3-1 on the day, ripping off three consecutive wins after the first round. Brua won by fall and gutted out a 14-13 win over Freya Munshi of Metrowest United to place third. Wentlent had a solid day in the circle, going 2-1. Wentlent earned a tech. fall in the first round, fell in the semifinals, and ripped off back-to-back falls to take third place. Rounding out the Saints's grapplers, Ridling picked up a win on the day via tech. fall.
DYU will now switch their focus to the postseason, first competing in the NCWWC Regional Championship on Sunday, February 23rd. Action will start at 10 a.m. on the campus of Elmira College.
