Wrestling for a Cause: D’Youville Women’s Wrestling Supports Local NICU Through Community Fundraiser

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In a room filled with laughter, anticipation, and the hum of a community coming together, the D'Youville University women's wrestling team found themselves in a different kind of arena—one where the stakes were far greater than wins and losses.

For the third consecutive year, the Saints volunteered at the annual meat raffle benefiting the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sisters of Charity Hospital. The event, organized by the hospital's department, serves as a critical fundraiser to support some of the hospital's most vulnerable patients—newborns in need of specialized, often life-saving care.

The NICU is a place no parent ever plans to be, yet one that many families unexpectedly rely on. Funds raised from the raffle go directly toward upgrading essential equipment and providing whatever is needed to care for these infants, offering hope during some of the most uncertain moments in a family's life.

With more than 300 attendees filling the venue, the D'Youville student-athletes take on the responsibility of running the floor—selling tickets round after round, engaging with guests, and helping keep the energy high throughout the night. Moving through the crowd with enthusiasm and purpose, the wrestlers transform a simple fundraiser into a lively, connected experience.

Head coach Carlene Sluberski reflected on what the experience means for her team.

"Opportunities like this allow our student-athletes to see the impact they can have beyond competition," Sluberski said. "Supporting an event that directly benefits families and newborns in need puts into perspective how important it is to give back. We are proud to be part of something that brings hope and resources to such a vital cause in our community."

It's a role that may seem far removed from the intensity of competition on the mat, but one that reflects the same discipline, teamwork, and commitment.

For the athletes, the impact of the night goes beyond the tasks at hand. Selling tickets becomes an opportunity to connect with members of the community, hear stories, and better understand the importance of the cause they're supporting. Each interaction is a reminder that their efforts—though small in the moment—contribute to something much larger.

In many ways, the environment mirrors the unpredictability of sport: fast-paced, emotional, and driven by a shared goal. But instead of chasing a scoreboard, the Saints are helping build a support system for families facing one of life's most difficult challenges.

As the event continues to grow each year, so does the team's sense of purpose. What began as a volunteer opportunity has become a meaningful tradition—one rooted in compassion, service, and a commitment to giving back.

For the D'Youville women's wrestling team, the night wasn't about recognition. It was about showing up, stepping in, and supporting a cause that truly matters—proving that the strongest performances don't always happen under bright lights, but often in the quiet moments of service that make a lasting difference.
