CORALVILLE, Iowa — D'Youville was represented on the national stage as Elizabeth Stricklin and Alyssa Sedillo competed at the inaugural NCAA Women's Wrestling National Championship in Coralville, Iowa.
Competing at 207 pounds, junior Elizabeth Stricklin recorded a win during the championship bracket. Stricklin earned a 3–1 decision victory over Jamie Shapton (WLIB) to secure a win for the Saints. She later faced Katja Osteen (IOWA), falling by pin in 0:51, and was also defeated by Caroline Ward (NCC), who secured a pin in 1:21. Both of Stricklin's losses came against wrestlers who went on to earn All-American honors in the tournament.
Leading up to the historic championship, Stricklin reflected on the opportunity to compete at the national tournament.
"I'm just happy to be able to be part of this," Stricklin said. "All I can do is go out there and give it my best and just wrestle."
True freshman Alyssa Sedillo competed at 103 pounds, gaining valuable experience in her first appearance on the national stage. Sedillo opened with a 9–4 loss to Sloane Kruger (PREB) before facing Heather Crull (MCK), who earned a 10–0 technical fall in 1:37. Despite the result, Sedillo managed to get in on a shot at Crull's legs, a feat that was rare for opponents throughout the season. Crull and McKendree Bearcats women's wrestling would go on to capture the national championship.
Sedillo battled through the tournament while dealing with what is believed to be a torn meniscus. Despite the results, both Saints wrestlers competed against some of the nation's top athletes while representing D'Youville at the historic first NCAA championship for women's wrestling.
The national championship marked the conclusion of the Saints' wrestling season, closing a year that saw D'Youville send two athletes to compete on the sport's biggest stage at the first NCAA championship for women's wrestling.
