READING, PA. — D'Youville turned in a strong showing at the Alvernia Open, hosted by Alvernia University in Pennsylvania, finishing second overall behind a deep and balanced performance.
The Saints recorded two first-place finishes, four runner-up results, one third-place finish and two fourth-place placers to secure the team's second-place standing.
Freshman Alyssa Sedillo led D'Youville at 103 pounds, going 2-0 on the day. Sedillo claimed the title with a 10-0 victory by superiority (VSU) at 1:45 in the final. Fellow freshman Shelby Galex also captured first place at 145 pounds, finishing 4-0 and closing the tournament with a fall (VFA) at 4:14 in the championship bout.
Alexis Brua posted a runner-up finish at 124 pounds after defeating the top seed in the semifinals with an 8-7 decision by points (VPO1). Madison Wellen added another second-place result at 131 pounds, going 3-1 and earning a 12-6 VPO1 win over second-seeded Gianna Slusser in the semifinals.
At 180 pounds, Riley Wentlent placed second with a 3-1 record, highlighted by a 3-2 victory by fall (VFA) at 5:38 in the semifinals. Elizabeth Stricklin rounded out the Saints' second-place finishes at 207 pounds, going 2-1 overall.
Emma Beckles reached the semifinals at 160 pounds before finishing fourth with a 3-2 record. Freshman Shaelie Young also placed fourth at 180 pounds, going 3-2 in the bracket.
D'Youville added a third-place finisher at 207 pounds in Mackenzie LaForest, who placed third despite a 1-2 record, with one of her losses coming against teammate Elizabeth Stricklin.
