DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - The D'Youville baseball team was back on the road Friday evening, taking on East Coast Conference foe, Mercy, in a high-scoring affair as the Saints dropped the opening game of the three-game series, 14-9. The loss drops D'Youville to 13-18 overall and 6-9 in league play.
The Saints struck first in the top of the second inning when junior Craig Oliver drove in freshman Chris Stefan on a sacrifice fly. Mercy erased D'Youviulle's early advantage with four runs in the bottom of the third innings, three of which came on a home run.
Trailing by three in the top of the fifth inning, an RBI single from sophomore Jeremy Glinski and a two-run single from Oliver knotted the game back up at five runs apiece.
The Mavericks responded by plating the game's next nine runs to take a 14-5 advantage.
D'Youville rallied in the top of the ninth using an RBI single from senior George Farid, a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Ethan Hammond, and another run-scoring single from junior John Rogowski, Jr. to create the 14-9 scoreline.
AT THE PLATE
Hammond (3-for-4, 3B, 2B, 2 RBI) and Oliver (2-for-3, 3 RBI) paced the Saints' offense in the series-opening setback.
UP NEXT
The Saints still have a chance to take the three-game set when they wrap up play with the Mavericks tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader from the campus of Mercy College. Game times are set for 12 and 3 p.m.
