Saints Keep Fans on Toes Saturday Afternoon At Home

BUFFALO, N.Y. – After stellar defensive and offensive efforts at Dobson Field Saturday afternoon, the D'Youville women's lacrosse team came out on top when freshman Sydney Gordon scored 30 seconds into the first overtime, securing the 12-11 win for the Saints. Marissa Malvaso and Riley Riedel paced the Saints offensively with three goals each, while Brinn Stworzydlak held it down in net with eight saves and five ground balls.

First Quarter Notables

  • The Knights struck first as McKenna Woodworth converted the free position shot at 9:58.
  • The Saints had back-to-back goals as Malvaso scored her 30th goal of the season at 8:20. Danielle Thompson added her tenth goal of the season at 7:59.
  • Each team was able to get one more tally on the scoreboard before the first break, as Gannon scored at 6:23 and Riedel took advantage of the man-up situation, putting one in the back of the net at 4:46.

Second Quarter Notables

  • Malvaso broke the single-season program record for assists (16) at 13:08 as she sent a pass to Riedel to extend the Saints' lead to 4-2 early in the second quarter.
  • Gannon got back within one goal almost three minutes later as Hepditch converted the free position shot after a foul by Anna Hayes.
  • Malvaso and Riedel connected again at 10:49 to extend the lead back to two goals.
  • Paige Cocina added her 19th goal of the season a little over a minute later, putting the Saints up by three.
  • The Knights brought it back within two at 5:44 as Caroline Stevens snuck one past Stworzydlak.
  • Malvaso scored off a pass from Cocina with seven seconds left in the half.
  • The Saints held a 7-4 lead going into the intermission.

Third Quarter Notables

  • Gannon came out of the break ready for the comeback, scoring at 11:54, before Cocina converted the free position attempt a minute later to extend the lead back to three.
  • Bethany Wolcott scored her 41st career goal, moving her into seventh in program history, at 8:52.
  • The Knights scored three goals in a row before Thompson was able to sneak one past the keeper with 3:35 to go in the quarter.
  • The Saints held the narrow 10-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter Notables

  • It looked like the Saints would easily take the win at home going into the fourth quarter, but the Knights had other plans.
  • Gannon put up four goals to take the lead, including the go-ahead goal from Rachel Tufts at 1:21.
  • The next minute was crucial for the Saints, as Gannon won the draw coming out of the Knights' goal.
  • The Saints put up tough defense, as Gannon turned it over and Malvaso picked up the ground ball and made her way up the field, scoring at 0:22 to tie the game.
  • Malvaso fired off a beautiful shot at 0:09, hitting the post as the final whistle blew and both teams prepared for overtime.

Overtime

  • After a brief intermission before overtime began, D'Youville came out ready.
  • Sydney Watters won the draw control, and the Saints were on the offense.
  • Scoring her lone goal of the game, but arguably the most important goal of the game, Gordon scored unassisted at 2:29.
