Regular Season Concludes with Loss at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. — D'Youville women's lacrosse (6-9, 3-3) fell to Mercy University with a final score of 21-6 on Saturday at Mercy Field.

The game commenced with D'Youville gaining early possession through a draw control by Lauren Parker. Despite an initial missed shot by Madison Handley, D'Youville quickly retaliated after a Mercy goal. Lily Buckley found the net at 11:59, assisted by Ireland Costigan, leveling the score. Mercy responded with a series of goals, leading 6–1 by the middle of the quarter. However, D'Youville regained momentum late in the quarter. Sam Newlin scored from a free position at 1:40, followed by a goal from Costigan at 1:02, closing the gap to 6–3 by the end of the first quarter.

D'Youville faced a challenging second quarter against the Mavs, as the latter capitalized on several opportunities. Mercy opened the scoring with a free position goal at 14:31, followed by a goal at 14:02. Despite draw control efforts by Parker and Breelynn Lalonde, D'Youville struggled to convert these possessions into goals. Handley attempted to break through Mercy's defense but was denied by goalkeeper Olivia LaMonica. As the quarter progressed, the Mavs continued their offensive surge, adding multiple goals, including a player-down goal at 11:50 and a player-up goal at 07:05. The quarter ended with Mercy leading 15–3.

D'Youville began the third quarter with a draw control by Parker, attempting to gain momentum early. Despite a wide shot by Newlin and a saved free position shot, the Mavs capitalized on their opportunities, extending their lead with multiple goals. D'Youville's defense, led by an Emily Odeychuk caused turnover, was active, but Mercy's offense proved formidable during this stretch. Handley scored for D'Youville with an assist from Costigan at 4:14, narrowing the gap slightly. However, Mercy responded with consistent scoring, maintaining its lead. D'Youville's efforts in the final minutes included a draw control by Newlin, but turnovers hindered further scoring opportunities. The quarter ended with Mercy leading 20–4.

In the fourth quarter, D'Youville's Newlin scored at 9:05 with an assist from Danielle Gephart, narrowing the margin. Lalonde's subsequent draw control set up another opportunity, but Mercy's defense held firm with a save by Emma Batter. D'Youville continued to press, and Buckley found the net at 4:47, assisted by Newlin. Despite a late push, D'Youville's efforts were countered by Mercy's defense.The game concluded with Mercy leading 21–6.

Costigan contributed significantly with one goal and two assists, demonstrating her playmaking abilities. Buckley led the scoring for the team, netting two goals off five shots. Parker controlled the draw circle effectively, accumulating 11 draw controls. Newlin also made a notable impact by scoring two goals and adding an assist, with four of her six shots on target.

The Saints will now focus on the ECC Women's Lacrosse Championship Semifinals where they will travel once again to Dobbs Ferry to take on the Mavs this Wednesday, April 29th.
