LOCKPORT, N.Y. - The D'Youville baseball team achieved another milestone victory during their 2022 campaign, defeating the College of Staten Island 7-6 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader for the program's ninth win of the season, setting a new program record for single-season wins at nine. The Saints, who also picked up their first NCAA Division II and first East Cost Conference wins earlier this season, were unable to complete the twin bill sweep, falling 18-5 in game two. D'Youville moves to 9-16 overall and 3-8 in ECC play.
Beginning on Friday, April 15, the Saints and Dolphins played to the bottom of the fifth inning when inclement weather and high winds forced the game to be suspended until Saturday.
Sophomore Alex Dzimian scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first. After reaching on a single to left field, Dzimian came around to score four batters later on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Alec Boucher. With runners on second and third, freshman John Rogowski, Jr. cashed in on the opportunity with a two-run single to left-center to put the Saints ahead 3-0.
After the Dolphins put a run on the board in the top of the fourth, Rogowski, Jr. answered with a solo home run to left-center in the home half of the frame. Rogowski, Jr.'s trip around the bases was his fourth of the season reestablished a three-run lead at 4-1.
The back-and-forth affair continued as CSI added two in the top of the fifth inning but sophomore Jeremy Glinski added one more for the Saints in the bottom of the inning, reaching on a fielder's choice that drove in Dzimian.
After play was suspended to Saturday morning, Rogowski, Jr. continued his big game with a sacrifice fly to left field that brought senior George Farid in from third.
Farid tacked on the Saints' final run in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single. The Dolphins added a pair of runs in the seventh but freshman Samuel Worthen shut down CSI's comeback attempt with his first save of the season.
Freshman Chris AuClair (W, 4-2) got the starting nod in the series opener and tossed 4.2 innings for the Saints where fanned seven batters while surrendering two earned runs on eight hits. In Worthen's 4.1 innings of relief, the Guelph, Ontario native only allowed one earned run on a pair hits.
Rogowski, Jr. (2-for-3, HR, 4 RBI) paced the Saints at the plate while Farid (2-for-3, RBI) and Dzimian (2-for-4) each hit safely multiple times … Sophomore Ethan Hammond (1-for-4) extended his hitting streak to 14 games in the milestone victory.
The Saints jumped out to another three-run lead in game two. In the bottom of the second, freshman Dillon Crook reached on a fielding error by the Dolphin shortstop allowing Rogowski, Jr., and Glinski to score. Two batters later, sophomore Caden Strobel advanced home on a passed ball to make it 3-0.
CSI took control of the game with a seven-run third inning, a five-run fourth inning, and a six-run fifth inning to create a 15-run gap.
An RBI double from Dzimian in the fifth inning and an RBI groundout from freshman Kullan Jamieson added a pair of runs for the Saints to close out the scoring.
The Saints hit the road for a midweek doubleheader against Mansfield on Tuesday, April 19. Game times for the non-conference twin bill are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.
