Roberts Comes Back to Defeat Women's Volleyball in Five-Set Season Finale

Box Score

A strong start did not prove to be enough for the D'Youville women's volleyball team on Friday evening, as the Saints were unable to finish off Roberts Wesleyan in a five-set defeat at the Voller Athletic Center in Rochester, N.Y.

The Red and White grabbed the first two sets, 25-18 and 31-29, but the Redhawks charged back to win three-straight frames by scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 15-10.

With the loss, the Saints finish the spring campaign with an 0-4 record, while the Redhawks shifted to 3-1 on the season.

Despite falling in five sets, freshman outside hitter Kelly Cleversley posted an outstanding night with 24 kills and 16 digs to tally her second double-double of the season. Fellow freshman Emma Wlostowski also notched her third double-double of the campaign, as the setter registered a career-high 24 assists along with 14 digs and three service aces. Following her fellow freshmen was right side hitter Nathalya Rocha, who tallied nine kills in the match.

The Roberts side was highlighted by four players recording an even 10 kills, as Emily Rowlison achieved a triple-double with 21 assists and 16 digs in addition to her 10 kills.

The Saints blitzed out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set, as a pair of aces from Wlostowski propelled them to an advantage that proved insurmountable. Roberts responded with its own 4-0 run but could never crawl back within one point of D'Youville, as a later 6-1 spurt by the Saints widen the gap to 17-10. The set was closed off with a kill by none other than Cleversley, as she tallied two of the last three points in the frame.

The second set saw the Redhawks jump out to a 4-0 edge, but the Saints chipped away that lead until a seven-point stretch flipped the lead over to D'Youville at 18-14. The Redhawks then had to battle back themselves, as a 3-0 run later brought the score even at 23-23. The two teams traded match points the rest of the way, but the Saints finally pulled through as a pair of Roberts attack errors and a kill from Carly Milleville gave D'Youville the set victory at 31-29.

In the third set, D'Youville and Roberts took turns taking the lead before the Saints found themselves out front, 19-14. Down by five, the Redhawks posted a 7-2 run to even the match, and then had to rattled off a 4-0 run spoil a D'Youville match point and come back to take the stanza.

Both teams again traded runs in the fourth set, sitting tied at 12-12 before the Redhawks managed a five-point run that gave them the lead for good. The Saints brought it within one point at 19-18, but Roberts pushed back with a closing 6-0 run to force a fifth and deciding set.

The fifth set looked to be going in the Saints direction after a six-point surge gave them an 8-4 edge, but the Redhawks used their home court advantage to go on a 11-2 stretch to retake the lead and eventually claim the set, 15-10. With the comeback complete, the Redhawks picked up their second five-set win over the Saints in the span of a month.
