District of Colombia – After a short trip to Brooklyn, the D'Youville men's basketball team got back on the bus and headed south for an East Coast Conference bout with the University of the District of Columbia. Despite facing an undermanned Firebird squad, the Saints were unable to take advantage and fell 83-69, a loss that drops the Saints to 1-10 on the season and 0-3 in ECC play.
Junior forward Garrian Wade got the Saints on the board first with a layup on an assist from junior guard Latrell Butler. Butler added the second of his five first-half assists on a dish to sophomore forward Chris Stineman to give D'Youville an early 4-3 lead. Stineman and Wade each traded buckets once more to continue a 7-0 run by the Saints that stretched D'Youville's lead to 8-3 after three minutes of play.
The Firebirds (3-9, 2-1 ECC) took their second lead of the night at 11-10 on a lay-in from Jahmir Williams that was a part of a 7-0 run of their own. Sophomore forward Noah Denz knotted the game back up at 21 at the 8:26 mark of the first half with a layup. A free throw from Wade four minutes later put the Saints back ahead, 25-24. Wade's free throw was D'Youville's last lead of the night as UDC turned a one-point lead with two and a half minutes remaining into an eight-point halftime advantage with a 7-0 spurt, capped off by a three-pointer from Kenyon Stone with 27 seconds remaining.
D'Youville struggled to make up ground in the second half by only shooting 42-percent from the field as UDC converted on 61-percent of their attempts, in addition to a 12-of-16 mark from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes. The Saints made things interesting as Wade collected another layup to pull D'Youville back to within seven points of the Firebird advantage just inside the four-minute mark of the final half. UDC finished the game, outscoring the Saints 14-8 to put D'Youville away for good.
Three Saints landed in double figures for scoring … Led by Wade (18 points, 7-10 FG), followed up by 15 points from junior guard Grant Beyer (5-8 FG, 5-5 3PT) and 12 points from Stineman (6-11 FG) … All three players recorded season-highs … Beyer's five three balls were the most he made in a game since Feb. 16, 2021, when he cashed in six threes in a 10-point loss to No. 21 Gannon … Wade matched his career-high in points as he also dropped 18 last season at Mercyhurst … Stineman's 12 points were a career-high and his first game at the collegiate level eclipsing 10+ points.
The six-man Firebirds were tough to contain from the field as they shot 52.5-percent (31-59 FG) and 46.7-percent from three (7-15 3PT) … D'Youville failed to eclipse 40-percent from the field while shooting 35-percent (8-24 3PT) from beyond the arc … The hosts edged D'Youville on the glass, outrebounding the Saints, 39-34.
The Saints will close out their four-game swing away from the College Center Gym when they travel back to New York City for a date with the College of Staten Island on Sunday, Dec. 19. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
