BUFFALO, N.Y. - The D'Youville men's basketball team opened up East Coast Conference action at the College Center Gym Friday evening. The Saints fell to Bridgeport, 90-66, dropping to 1-7 on the season and 0-1 in ECC play.
Freshman guard Latrell Butler got the Saints on the board first with a jumper, but it was the Purple Knights (3-6, 1-0 ECC) who took control early with a 9-4 advantage. D'Youville answered with an 11-4 run to take a 15-13 lead after a pair of free throws from freshman forward Jared Sullivan. The guests regained control with a 10-2 run as the Saints struggled to find the bottom of the net in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 38-percent (14-37 FG) from the field and 17-percent (3-18 3PT) from beyond the arc.
Ahead by ten to open the second half, the Purple Knights kept their foot on the gas pedal, opening the final period with a 14-2 run in the first two minutes. The scoring spurt featured four consecutive threes, a trio of those from Tim Dawson that helped put Bridgeport ahead by 22. Senior forward Grant Beyer was able to cut the lead back down to 15 points with 11 minutes to go on a layup. D'Youville struggled then to get any closer as they only managed to knock down one of their eight three-point attempts in the second half.
Two Saints landed in double figures in scoring led by Sullivan's 14 points (6-7 FG) and freshman guard Mason Putnam's 10 points (4-13 FG) … Bridgeport controlled the game in the paint, outscoring the Saints 54-38 while the Purple Knights grabbed 50 rebounds to D'Youville's 39.
The Saints will continue league play when they travel to Rochester, N.Y. for a date with Roberts Wesleyan on Sunday, Dec. 12. Tip-off from the Voller Athletic Center is scheduled for 4 p.m.
