Men Lose at Home to Alfred State

Amherst, NY – The D'Youville baseball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against Alfred State on Wednesday afternoon, falling to the Pioneers 4-1 in game one and 10-0 in game two.

Alfred State scored a run in each of the first two innings to take a 2-0 lead. They would then tack on a run in the fourth, increasing their lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans would get their lone run across the plate. Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) led off with a double. He would then come around to score in the next at-bat after Renato Quinones (Lockport, NY/Saint Joe's) singled and an error by the Alfred State first baseman that would allow Varney to score as the Spartans trailed 3-1 after four.

The Pioneers would score an additional run in the top of the seventh to increase their lead back up to three. D'Youville was unable to score any further runs as they would lose game one 4-1.

Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) led the team with two hits, followed by Varney, Quinones, Shane Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden), and Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) all tallying one. Adam Lampman (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) pitched very well in the game, going 7.0 innings with four earned runs allow, four strikeouts, and eight hits.

Game two saw Alfred State's best pitcher go and pitch extremely well. They scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth for a 3-1 lead. The Pioneers had one big inning in the sixth with five runs, adding one in the seventh and one in the ninth as the won the game 10-0.

Varney, Quinones, Critelli, Alex Liem (Dorchester, Ont./Dorchester Secondary), and Burke all tallied hits in the game. Haak got the start in the game, pitching 5.1 innings with Nick Jank (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) pitched 1.2 innings of relief, allowing no earned runs. Critelli pitched an inning with no hits or runs allowed while Quinones made his pitching debut with one inning of work.

The next doubleheader for the men comes this Saturday, April 13 as they host Penn State-Altoona beginning at 1:00pm for the team's senior day.
