Second Shutout of Season Keeps Women's Soccer Undefeated in Conference Play

Box Score

Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville women's soccer team picked up their second conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon, shutting out the La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 2-0.

A fair amount of offense took place in the first 22 minutes of the game. La Roche recorded five shots to D'Youville's four, but the Spartan's fifth shot would be the most important. Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) dribbled past the Redhawk defense to beat the keeper, making it a 1-0 game in favor of the Spartans.

Until the final three minutes of the half, the Spartans continued to bring wave after wave on offense. Both Laurie Poeller (Akron, NY/Akron) and Maggie Leeds (Lockport, NY/Akron) each had shots on goal with two additional shots being taken, along with a pair of corners.

Despite two shots late in the half from La Roche, D'Youville held on and went into the half leading 1-0.

D'Youville challenged the Redhawk's defense less than 10 minutes into the second half as Leeds and Magee forced the La Roche goalkeeper to make a pair of saves. The Redhawks were knocking on the door to level the score in the 57th and 58th minute, but the Spartans would end up being the team to change the score.

In the 60th minute, Jamiliah McBryde (Buffalo, NY/Erie CC) scored her first goal as a Spartan to give D'Youville a 2-0 lead. Throughout the final 30 minutes of the game, the D'Youville defense was extremely impressive. They allowed no quality scoring chances as the Spartans would go on to win their second conference game by the score of 2-0.

Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and the D'Youville defense were key in the Spartan's win. With 12 saves, Dulniak posted her second shutout of the season to give the team their second conference win. Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack), Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Anna Hayes (Hamburg, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy), Isabella Lucania (Webster, NY/Webster-Schroeder), and Cassandra Brooks (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) all played strong ahead of Dulniak in the win.

On offense, Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) tallied three shots as Makenna Magee led the team with five. Leeds chipped in with three as well and McBryde added two, including her first goal with the team. Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) picked up an assist on Magee's goal as well.

The next game for the women will come this Wednesday, October 3 as the Spartans visit Medaille at 5:00pm.
