Box Score Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team suffered their second consecutive loss to open the season on Saturday afternoon after falling to the Potsdam Bears by the final of 5-0.
Potsdam was on the offensive early in the game, outshooting the Spartans 3-0 in the first 15 minutes. Then in the 19th minute, the Bears pounced as they took a shot from outside the box that found the back of the net and gave Potsdam the 1-0 lead.
Just over three minutes later, the scored doubled in favor of the Bears to go up 2-0. Then just four minutes later, Potsdam got hold of a loose ball in the box to make it three goals in less than 10 minutes for the visitors, giving them a commanding 3-0 lead. The advantage lasted to halftime as Potsdam was able to lock the Spartans down, leading 3-0.
The Bears opened up the second half with a free kick goal in the 53rd minute, sending them up 4-0. In the 70th minute, Potsdam scored their fifth and final goal of the game as they went on to win the game 5-0 and the Spartan Classic.
On offense, the Spartans struggled throughout the game. They failed to register a shot on goal and had one shot in the game.
Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made three saves in the game with Jordyn James (Brighton, NY/Brighton) and Clarice Byrne (Boston, NY/Hamburg) each making their debuts in goal. James made five saves in the game while Byrne recorded two – allowing no goals.
On defense, Dominique Riforgiate (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia) had a solid tournament and was the rock of the team's defense. She was named to the all-tournament team.
The next game for the women comes Friday, September 7 as they face Fredonia in their host tournament, the Blue Devil Classic.
