Redhawks End Spartans Three-Game Winning Streak

Box Score

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team had their three-game winning streak abruptly end Saturday afternoon, falling to the La Roche Redhawks by the final score of 93-55.

La Roche established an early lead over D'Youville as they led 10-6 just under four minutes into the game. After falling behind by as many as nine, the Spartans closed the gap to three with a three from Wanya Bruce (Rochester, NY/Fairport) to make the score 17-14 La Roche. Minutes later, D'Youville pulled to within one possession as Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) hit a three with 10:26 to go in the half.

The Spartans remained down two with 7:04 to go as Bruce hit his second three of the half to make the score 34-32. Following Bruce's three, D'Youville would go cold on offense as La Roche heated up. For the next five minutes, the Redhawks outscored the Spartans 18-1 to take a commanding 52-33 and would go onto take a 54-35 lead into the half.

D'Youville was unable to get their offense going as the second half began. They scored five points in the first 7:56 of the half as La Roche continued to roll with the Redhawks leading 72-40. From then on, the game was too far out of reach for the men to come back. The score differential between the two teams remained large to the end as La Roche defeated D'Youville by the score of 93-55.

"La Roche came out very aggressively and played a smart physical game," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We were able to match them for awhile, but could not keep up with them. We were definitely disappointed in today's game, especially after playing so well the last three games. I told the guys that even the best teams have a bad game occasionally and we need to get this game out of our system and come back ready for Monday."

Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) led the team with 13 points with Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) leading the way with 11 rebounds. Socha had a team high 11 points off the bench while Bruice and Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) each had six points. Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) had six points of his own while Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) added two points.

The next game for the men comes this Monday, January 15 at 6:00pm as they host the Hilbert Hawks.
