Third Straight Shutout Gives Women Victory over Hilbert

Box Score

Hamburg, NY – The D'Youville women's soccer team earned their third straight shutout victory on Wednesday afternoon by defeating the Hilbert Hawks 3-0.

In the first 14 minutes of the game, the Spartans maintained a steady presence in the Hilbert defensive third. The women had two corners and five shots all before the Hawks were able to record a shot. As the half wore on, the Hilbert started applying pressure to the D'Youville defense before the Spartans broke the scoreless tie.

In the 33rd minute, Victoria Mayer (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored her first career goal on a looping shot outside the box that beat the Hilbert keeper for a 1-0 lead. The Hawks picked up their offensive efforts even further after conceding their first goal, but weren't able to find the back of the net and went into halftime trailing 1-0.

Before Hilbert could record a shot in the second half, the Spartans doubled their lead. In the 51st minute, Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) scored her team leading sixth goal of the season off an assist from Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School). Both teams began to lock down on defense for a period of time in the half until D'Youville added an insurance goal to their lead.

A cross from Campbell in the 68th minute found the foot of Jennifer Hoffman (Perrysburg, OH/St. Ursula Academy) who scored her second goal of the season to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. The two teams would trades shots back-and-forth throughout the remainder of the half, but no more goals would be scored as D'Youville went on to defeat Hilbert by the final of 3-0.

With 23 shots in the game, the women had an extremely successful day on offense. However, the team's defense stole the show once again. Goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) made just three saves to record her third consecutive shutout and win. The starting back line of Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy), Dominique Riforgiato (Fredonia, NY/Fredonia), Amber Lundrigan (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy), and Johnson had a very strong defensive effort and played a big role in the team's win.

In the midfield, Kaylee Heschke (Newfane, NY/Newfane) played a sound all-around game. The women had several players record multiple shots, led by Campbell and Jillian Golding (Lockport, NY/Lockport) with five each. Makenna Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) and Heschke each had three shots.

The next game for the women comes this Saturday, October 21 as they travel to Penn State-Altoona. Game time against the Lions is 3:15pm.
