Box Score Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's soccer team continued their hot start to the 2016 season as they won their third consecutive game Wednesday evening, defeating the Thiel Tomcats 6-0.
Out to a quick start, the Spartans tallied three shots in the first six minutes of play. Breanne Nelson (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia Mumford), coming off a fantastic opening weekend, forced the Thiel goalkeeper to make a save early on in the game to keep it scoreless.
In the 9th minute of the game, freshman Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) broke the scoreless tie with her first career collegiate goal to give the team a 1-0, with the assist going to Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack). The team would continue their offensive pressure, totaling four shots over the next 10 minutes.
In the 19th minute, Rachel Hermanski (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) added to the team's lead by taking the ball from half to goal to double the team's lead. The score would hold the same for the remainder of the half, with D'Youville leading 2-0.
The Spartans put the pressure on early and often to begin the second half of play. They put several shots on frame, forcing the Tomcat goalie to make several saves. In the 65th minute, Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) scored her first goal of the season off a header to bring the score to 3-0. Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) picked up the assist with the corner kick.
Just a minute later, D'Youville added yet another goal, this time with Magee earning her first goal of the game. Johnson added another assist in as many minutes.
Heading into the final 10 minutes of the game, the Spartans attack didn't slow down. In the 82nd minute, Magee added her second goal of the game and fourth goal in the last two games to make the game 5-0. She received the ball on a low cross from freshman Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and tapped the ball in.
With two minutes to go, Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden) sent a through ball to Hermanski for her second goal of the game, giving the Spartans a 6-0 lead. D'Youville would go on to win the game by the same score.
Magee led the offense with a five-point performance in the game. She had two goals and one assist, while Hermanski also had two goals. Cristofanelli and Tomizzi each recorded their first goals of the season, while Johnson had two assists to lead the team.
Goalkeeper Megan Dulniak (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and the Spartan defense recorded their third consecutive shutout to begin the season. Dulniak made four saves to keep a clean sheet. The defense of Nelson, Tomizzi, Kailee Juzdowski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) were solid in front of their sophomore goalkeeper once again. Ariel Wood (Nunda, NY/Keshequa) was impressive in front of the back four, providing a bridge between the defense and offense.
The team's freshmen reserves came in and played a big role for the team, helping them secure their third win of the season. Rebecca Sliwowski (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls), Jordyn Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) and Rachel McMahan (Grand Island, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) offered fresh legs off the bench and helped keep the pressure on the Tomcats.
D'Youville will look to continue their hot start to the season on Saturday, September 10th as they host Houghton at 1pm at Dobson Field.
