Women Open Conference Play with Second Straight OT Loss

Box Score

Pittsburgh, PA - The D'Youville women's soccer team opened up conference play on Saturday against the La Roche Redhawks and were defeated in overtime for the second time in as many games, falling in double overtime 2-1.

D'Youville had the early advantage on offense with the two first shots on goal in the game. Just over half way through the first half, Kailee Juzdowski (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) and Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) had a pair of shots on goal less than a minute apart, but where unable to beat the La Roche keeper.

The team's defense was outstanding early on as they have been all season. Goalkeeper Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) wasn't forced to make a save until the 31st minute and handled the Redhawks offense just fine. The two teams remained scoreless and went into halftime tied at 0-0.

To begin the second half, Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) nearly broke the scoreless tie but took a shot that rang off the post. As the half progressed, the Redhawks found a way to break through the stout Spartan defense to gain a 1-0 advantage after a headed in corner in the 58th minute.

However, just four minutes later Cristofanelli made no mistake after scoring her second goal in as many games to tie the game at 1-1. With the game tied, La Roche's offense began to pick up the pace. Campbell saw several shots in the next ten minutes, making five saves. The game would remain close until the end of regulation and the two teams would head to overtime tied a 1-1.

Just 1:46 into the first overtime, Campbell made a big save to keep D'Youville in the game. Then with under two minutes remaining, Rachel Hermanski (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) drilled a shot off the crossbar, nearly ending the game. The first OT would end still tied at 1-1.

Half way through the second OT, Campbell made a big save, resulting in a La Roche corner. On the ensuing corner kick, the Redhawks would score to win the game by the final score of 2-1.

Cristofanelli and Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) for the team lead in shots with four. Johnson and Hermanski each had three. On defense, Juzdowski, Juda, Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) and Emily Ward (Leonardsville, NY/Mount Markham) each played strong games. In goal, Campbell was outstanding with 12 saves.

D'Youville will host the Penn State-Behrend Lions on Tuesday, September 27th for their first home AMCC game of the season. The game will begin at 5pm.
