Steubenville, OH - The D'Youville women's soccer team suffered their third conference loss of the season on Saturday afternoon after they were defeated by the host Franciscan Barons by the final of 2-0.

D'Youville was close to taking an early lead less than eight minutes into the game with shots from Marina Campbell (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Kiernan Johnson (Cherry Valley, IL/Keith School) missing shots back-to-back just wide. Just over ten minutes later, the Spartans challenged again to take the lead with Magan Magee (Ellenburg Center, NY/Northern Adirondack) and Jenna Tomizzi (Buffalo, NY/Sacred Heart Academy) each forcing the Franciscan keeper to make a save.

The Barons would put pressure on the Spartan defense, forcing goalie Jennifer Hoffman (Perrysburg, PA/St. Ursula Academy) making a pair of saves in as many minutes. However, a third shot in third minutes beat Hoffman, giving Franciscan the 1-0 lead. There would be no change in score for the remainder of the half with the Barons holding a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes.

Hoffman was called upon again to start the second half, making four additional saves in the first 17 minutes of play. In the 85th minute, Franciscan added an insurance goal to take a 2-0 lead. They would keep that lead and hold it until the final whistle, defeating the Spartans 2-0.

Rachel Hermanski (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) led the team with three shots, followed by Campbell, Johnson and Brittany Cristofanelli (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) with two each. Hoffman made nine saves on 11 shots in her first start of the season. Breanne Nelson (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) returned from injury to see some playing time as well.

The next game for the women will be on Wednesday, October 5th against Medaille. The Mavericks will host D'Youville at Dobson Field with the game beginning at 5pm.
