Box Score 2 Alfred, NY – The D'Youville Baseball Team brought their big bats on the road to Alfred State on Tuesday, losing in game one to the Pioneers 10-4 and winning game two 16-8.
Alfred State scored 2 runs in both the bottom of the first and bottom of the second to take an early 4-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Nick Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) doubled to bring home Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) from second. Adding another run in the top of the fifth, Kyle Taylor (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) reached base on a single. He would advance on an error from the Pioneer right fielder after Matt Wendling (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) singled. Simoncelli would drive Taylor in, cutting the deficit to two.
The Pioneers would hang 6 more runs up in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 10-2 lead. Thomas Brummer (Amherst, NY/St. Joe's) singled with two outs in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back walks to Wendling and Simoncelli loaded the bases for Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius). The freshman came to the plate and singled, bringing Brummer and Wendling in to score.
The two late runs wouldn't be enough as the Spartans would fall to Alfred State in game one by the final of 10-4. Macrides led the team with 2 RBIs, while Wendling led the team with 2 hits. Anthony Oliveri (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) picked up the loss in 5 innings of work.
Game two was much different for D'Youville as their offense broke out in a big way.
The Alfred State pitching was erratic to begin the game. A wild pitch, walk and passed ball accounted for the first run of the game for D'Youville. A throwing error allowed Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) to reach first, and gave Eric Simoncelli the opportunity to score and make the game 2-0. Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) scored from third on a wild pitch after Travis Macrides loaded the bases with a walk. Nick Ivanoff walked to load the bases again, and Chris Ferril (Buffalo, NY/DaVinci) singled to bring in Reynolds and make the game 4-0 Spartans.
In the bottom of the first, the Pioneers got 2 runs back and cut the score to 4-2. D'Youville would answer right back and score 4 more runs in the top of the second. Thomas Brummer singled and stole second to begin the inning. Matt Wendling walked and the two baserunners were driven home by Eric Simoncelli on a double. Reynolds came up two batters later and scored Simoncelli for the third run of the inning. Picking up his second RBI of the game was Ferril, who brought home Reynolds making the score 8-2.
Not to be outdone, Alfred State would score 4 runs in the third and 1 run in the fourth to chip away at the Spartan lead. Entering the fifth up 8-7, D'Youville would have their best offensive inning of the season. The first run would be scored by Ferril off of the bat of Wendling, who singled and advanced Brummer to second. Next up was Simoncelli, who doubled to bring in Brummer and advancing Wendling to third. Wendling and Simoncelli would score after Reynolds reached base on an error, bringing the run total to 4 in the inning.
Stimpfel scored the fifth run of the inning on a wild pitch after walking earlier in the inning. The next batter, Macrides, would walk in the next at-bat. An Ivanoff saf-fly brought home Reynolds for the sixth run of the game. Taylor would come up later in the inning to score Macrides for the seventh and final run of the inning.
Wendling would score again in the sixth after a throwing error in Stimpfel's at-bat. Alfred State would get a run back in the bottom of the sixth but their run total would be half of D'Youville's total as the Spartans defeated the Pioneers by the final score of 16-8.
Seven different players would account for a run for the Spartans, with 5 accounting for more than 1. Brummer, Wendling, Simoncelli and Reynolds would all record 3 runs each, with Macrides and Ferril accounting for 1 each and Stimpfel tallying 2. Simoncelli led the team with 3 RBIs while Reynolds and Ferril each had 2.
Not only did he get the job done at the plate, but Ferril picked up his first win of the season. In 3.2 innings, Ferril allowed 1 earned run and struck out 1 batter to earn his first collegiate win.
The next pair of game for the Spartans comes on Thursday, April 16th as the team heads to Elmira to play at 3:30/5pm.
