Box Score Buffalo, NY - A hot start by the host Medaille Mavericks proved to be too much for the D'Youville Men's Basketball Team as they were defeated by the score of 103-52 Wednesday evening.
The Mavericks wasted no time taking over the game. After a Marcus Clarke (Olean, NY/Archbishop Walsh Academy) made free throw, Medaille went on a 23-5 run in the next 5 minutes to take control of the game. More of the same happened for the rest of the first half with the score being 66-22 at the first half whistle.
Medaille's first half was due in large part to the team shooting a combined 49% from the field, 58% from behind the arc and 86% from the line.
The second half was dominated by Medaille, defeating the Spartans by the final score of 103-52. Off of turnovers, the Mavericks scored 34 points and scored 24 more points in the paint than the visiting Spartans.
"To use a boxing analogy, we were knocked out in the first round," said fourth year Head Coach Earl Schunk.
"They came out shooting extremely well on offense and their aggressiveness on defense bothered us," Schunk continued.
Julian Reed (Cheektowaga, NY/Union-Endicott) led the Spartans in scoring with 18 points. Also leading the team in rebounds, Reed pulled in 11 to earn yet another double-double. Rejecting 5 more shots added to Reed's total, which currently has earned him the third spot in the nation in blocks.
All 15 D'Youville players that suited up in the red and black played Wednesday night. Freshmen Zach Blask (Portville, NY/Portville) and Adam Ibrahim (New Port Richey, FL/Ridgewood) led the team in points off the bench with 5 each.
"Games like this tests a team's character; I have a lot of faith in the ability of my guys to bounce back," said Schunk.
On moving forward from this game, Schunk knows the team will get another chance to improve on their effort.
"The good thing about the basketball schedule is we get a rematch with these guys."
The next game for the Spartans is Saturday, January 10th at 3pm at Mount Aloysius.
