Box Score Buffalo, NY - September 4th, 2014 - As the sun faded away and the lights came on at the new D'Youville Athletic Complex, the D'Youville Women's Soccer Team captured their first victory of the season winning 3-0 over Thiel College.
Junior midfielder Melissa LaVere (Clarence, NY/Clarence) opened up the scoring for the Spartans in beautiful fashion by placing a shot taken just outside the 18 yard past the goalie's outstretched arms into the back of the net. The assists on LaVere's goal went to sophomore Rachel Hermanski (Buffalo, NY/Maryvale) and fellow junior Liz Lyons (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster).
After assisting on the first goal, Lyons then captured a goal of her own, making the count 2-0 D'Youville. The assist came from sophomore Terra Juda (North Tonawanda, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield).
The pattern continued with Juda tallying the third and final goal of the game on a breakaway for the Spartans. As she did on the first goal, Lyons picked up the assist by delivering a beautiful through ball to Juda for the 1 on 1 chance against the goalie.
Freshman goalie Morgan Price (Spencer, NY/Spencer Van-Etten) recorder her first career shutout, making 3 saves. Price had strong play infront of her on defense by a veteran group.
Juda, Hermanski, Lyons and junior defender Aimee Pfuntner (Wayland, NY/Wayland Cohocton) all played strong in transition and created several scoring chances for the Spartans.
"It feels good to get the win in our home opener," said an excited Head Coach Lew Potter, now in his 6th year in charge of the team.
He continued, "We still have a lot to work on, but its early and I like the positive attitude and strong work ethic our players bring each day."
As a team, D'Youville put 20 shots on the Thiel net, showing not only their sound defense, but dangerous offense.
The next game for the women is Saturday, September 6th against Buffalo State. The game begins at 4pm.
