Buffalo, N.Y.- It was a day that even the most hardcore baseball player and fan would buckle under. First pitch temperature for today's non-conference doubleheader versus Cazenovia was 35 degrees. Factor in a steady wind that pushed the wind chill into the twenties and toss in intermittent snow flurries.
West Seneca, N.Y.-Visiting Cazenovia broke open a 1-1 game with three runs in the sixth, all with two outs, and an insurance run in the seventh to take game one of the twin-bill 5-2.
D'Youville managed just three hits but still generated scoring opportunities. The Spartans came up short in a seventh inning rally that left two in scoring position and the tying run at the plate. Earlier in the game the Spartans left four in scoring position, had a runner thrown out at home, and were doubled up twice on balls hit to the outfield.
Brent Gibbs (Wayland-Cohocton), Matt Veronica (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East), and Jeff Spors (Tonawanda, NY/Kenmore East) had the D'Youville hits.
Spartan starter Dan Fox (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) struck out five over four innings and gave up one run.
Game two was tied at 0-0 through two complete and was called due to snow. Spartan starter Brent Gibbs had stuck out four to that point. The cancelled game will not be made up.
D'Youville will play Mount Aloysius April 6 in their first AMCC date of the season. Doubleheader start time is 1:00 p.m. and the site is Erie Community College North Campus (6205 Main St.; Williamsville, NY).
