Women's Soccer Wins Second-Straight Conference Game

Box Score

Buffalo, NY-Women's soccer won their second-straight conference game with a 2-0 win over visiting La Roche College.  The win improves the Spartan's AMCC record to 3-1-1 (7-4-3 overall).

The Spartans got on the board in the 23rd minute when Danielle Gehen (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) took a Nicole LaVere (Clarence, NY/Williamsville East) pass, stepped past a defender and drilled a shot inside the left post. It was Gehen's team-leading sixth goal of the season.

From that point, the Spartans had several opportunities to extend the margin but failed to finish.

Gehen missed a penalty kick wide left in the 28th minute. Rebecca Alvira (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) was stopped in the 53rd minute on a shot after a pretty give and go with Gehen. Emily Carias (Eden, NY/Eden) was thwarted in the 71st minute when her shot just inside the top of the box was turned away.

D'Youville goalkeeper Christina Ventresca (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) made a huge stop in the 72nd minute to keep the Spartans in the lead. Ventresca deflected a high drive off a free kick just over the crossbar

The Spartans finally broke through with a much needed insurance marker in the 80th minute when Nicole LaVere took an Alvira pass inside the box and buried a shot for her fifth goal of the season.

Ventresca preserved the shutout by making a diving save in the 85th minute. The Red and White's keeper made five saves for her seventh shutout of the season.

Next on the schedule for the Spartans is a home game versus Medaille College October 15. Kickoff at the Riverside Athletic Complex will be at 7:00 p.m.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the La Roche men's team defeated D'Youville 7-0.  The game was a relatively close affair through the first 70 minutes. The visiting Redhawks took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break and the game's final goals came in the final twenty minutes.

Joseph Cordier (Delevan, NY/Pioneer) and Jeff Turner (Lackawanna, NY/Lackawanna) recorded shots on goal. Spartan's goalkeeper Matt Smith (Bergen, NY/Byron-Bergen) made 12 saves, many of them spectacular.

D'Youville hosts Medaille on October 16 at the Riverside Athletic Complex. Kickoff is under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
