UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — D'Youville defeated John Carroll University 3-2 on Wednesday, overcoming an early deficit with two third-quarter goals from Jimena Loustalot to secure the victory.
D'Youville finished with an 18-8 advantage in shots and put 16 attempts on goal, compared with six shots on goal for John Carroll. Loustalot led the Saints with two goals and an assist, including the game-winning goal, while Hallie Villavechia made three saves and D'Youville recorded a defensive save.
John Carroll opened the scoring in the first quarter, but D'Youville quickly responded. Samantha Neidhold scored at 5:44 off an assist from Loustalot to even the game at 1-1. Addyson Trimbell and Meeah Wegryznowski also created scoring chances during the quarter, while Villavechia made two saves to keep the game tied entering the second.
D'Youville controlled possession and generated three shots on goal in a scoreless second quarter. Rowynn Pickering had two attempts saved, while Caroline Pitarra added another shot on goal. John Carroll managed just one shot in the quarter, which went wide, sending the game into halftime tied at 1-1.
Loustalot gave D'Youville the lead at 33:59, converting for her first goal of the game. She struck again at 36:45 to push the Saints' advantage to 3-1. D'Youville applied pressure throughout the quarter, earning four penalty corners and putting five shots on goal. John Carroll answered with a goal at 44:07, but the Saints carried a 3-2 lead into the fourth quarter.
D'Youville's defense held John Carroll scoreless in the final 15 minutes to preserve the victory. Pickering recorded a defensive save early in the quarter, while Villavechia stopped a late John Carroll attempt at 58:20. The Saints also generated offensive pressure midway through the quarter, earning two penalty corners and producing two shots from Loustalot.
Loustalot finished with five shots and four shots on goal to go with her two goals and assist. Neidhold recorded a goal on three shots, including two shots on goal, while Pickering added two shots on goal and a defensive save. Villavechia played all 60 minutes in goal and made three saves.
