Saints Cruise Past UDC in Conference Opener

WASHINGTON, D.C. — D'Youville men's lacrosse (6-2, 1-0) dominated the University of the District of Columbia with a 19-3 victory on Saturday at UDC. 

The Saints began the first quarter by establishing defensive strength, with Casey Berns making critical saves to keep the Firebirds scoreless. The offensive momentum surged when Graham Sholett opened the scoring at 6:56, followed by a goal from Stefano Evan shortly after. Noah Suchyna added to the lead, assisted by Darryl Cooper, bringing the score to 3-0 by the end of the quarter.

DYU dominated the second quarter against UDC, opening with a rapid sequence of goals. Jake Bush initiated momentum by winning the faceoff, leading to Sholett scoring with an assist from Evan at 13:59. Moments later, Johnny Lafleur added another, assisted by Sam Radka, further extending the lead.

D'Youville continued its offensive control with Sholett and Carsyn Kent each finding the back of the net, the latter assisted by Raymond Cortes, contributing to a 9-goal quarter for D'Youville. Luciano Gonzalez capitalized on a man-up opportunity, and Jack Devlin closed the quarter with a goal assisted by Suchyna, leaving the score at 12-1 in favor of D'Youville heading into the break.

The Saints maintained control in the third quarter, with Evan netting a goal at 12:22 and Brady Ruffalo adding another goal at 11:01, assisted by Sholett. These scores were part of a series of successful faceoffs by Cooper, leading to ground ball recoveries by teammates such as Brody Strong and Cameron Webber. Despite two goals from the Firebirds, including a man-up goal at 2:53, DYU held its ground. The quarter concluded with the D'Youville leading 14-3, ensuring their victory as the game ended with this score.

DYU dominated the fourth quarter with a decisive offensive performance, beginning with Sholett's goal at 13:45, assisted by Trevor Miller. This set the tone for D'Youville, as Kent quickly followed with another goal at 11:59, assisted by Evan. Ruffalo added to the lead with a goal at 11:29, assisted by Suchyna, cementing the Saints' control of the quarter. Miller's goal at 7:12, with an assist from Suchyna, and another goal by Sholett at 2:40, assisted by Gonzalez, highlighted D'Youville's unrelenting attack.

Despite the Firebirds' attempts to regroup with timeouts and offensive plays, D'Youville's defense, led by goalie Ryan Hughes with multiple saves, kept a clean sheet in the quarter. The game concluded with DYU securing a commanding 19-3 victory, marking a strong finish to the match.

Sholett led the offensive charge with six goals and one assist, including the game-winning goal. Suchyna contributed significantly with one goal and four assists, keeping the attack dynamic. Cooper dominated possessions, winning 15 of his 20 faceoffs. Evan added two goals and three assists, showcasing versatility in scoring and playmaking.

In its next game, D'Youville will travel to face St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday, March 21 at 2:30 p.m. The matchup will take place in Sparkill, New York.
