The first quarter began with St. Thomas Aquinas taking an early lead as Janiek Steenbeeke scored off a penalty corner just 42 seconds in, assisted by Clemence Papleux. The Saints responded quickly with offensive pressure, including a shots by
Meeah Wegrzynowski and
Madisyn Grawl, both saved by Ailsa Ogilvie. Despite multiple penalty corners and a green card on Grawl, DYU was unable to convert their opportunities into points, closing the quarter trailing 1-0.
Madisyn Grawl's play defined the second quarter as she orchestrated a comeback for D'Youville. After a goal by Clemence Papleux put St. Thomas Aquinas ahead in the 20th minute, the Saints responded, driving four consecutive penalty corners. Grawl's efforts paid off with a goal in the 25th minute, assisted by
Addyson Trimbell, and another in the 28th, assisted by
Nicole Chapungu, leveling the score at 2-2. The Saints' defense, highlighted by a defensive save from
Chloe Burkhard, ensured the game remained tied as the quarter concluded.
The third quarter began with a strong offensive push from the Saints, as DYU aggressively sought opportunities, taking multiple shots and earning several penalty corners. Despite persistent efforts, including shots on goal by
Chloe Burkhard and
Ella Darvalics, the St. Thomas Aquinas goalkeeper Ailsa Ogilvie managed to keep the score tied heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter commenced with the Saints'
Erica Prible attempting an early shot, which went wide. Despite a series of penalty corners initiated by Grawl, the Saints couldn't capitalize, as
Olivia McClaine's shot was saved by the St. Thomas Aquinas goalkeeper Ogilvie.
Georgiana Pool made a crucial save in the 55th minute, denying a shot from Papleux, maintaining a scoreless quarter and a tight game at 2-2.
The overtime period began with the Saints' McClaine taking an early breakaway opportunity, which was saved by St. Thomas Aquinas' goalkeeper Ogilvie. Grawl also attempted to break the deadlock with two shots, one going wide and the other saved. The decisive moment came in the 7th minute of overtime, when St. Thomas Aquinas' Steenbeeke scored, assisted by Papleux, securing a 3-2 victory for the visitors.
Grawl led the team's offense, scoring two goals on seven shots. This marked her second and third goals of the young season. Trimbell contributed with an assist and recorded two shots on goal. Chapungu also added an assist, complementing her two shots on goal. Prible was active offensively, taking four shots with two on target.
In their next game, the Saints travel to Kutztown, P.A, to face Kutztown University on September 19th at 5 p.m.
