BUFFALO, N.Y. – Returning back home after on the road for two games, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team cruised past St. Thomas Aquinas College with a 17-5 win Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (4-5, 1-1 ECC) were led offensively by
Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) with eight points (6 goals, 2 assists) with
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) adding five points (4 goals, 1 assist).
Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and
Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's) each accounted for four points each.
Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y./Mount St. Mary Academy) and
BreeLynn LaLonde (Theresa, N.Y./Indian River) led the way with four groundballs apiece with Fischer leading the way with four caused turnovers.
Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) got things started with nine draw controls.
DYU got the scoring started with Handley and Buck finding the back of the net. The Spartans got one back, but it was all Saints after that. D'Youville scored nine unanswered goals to push their lead to 11-1 six minutes into the second quarter. Handley scored fur goals during the stretch with Buck adding two of her own. STAC scored once more before the break as the Saints took an 11-2 lead into the break.
Coming out of halftime, DYU kept the offense humming with three more goals to lead 14-2 with 7:39 left in the third. The Spartans scored again to chip away at the lead to make it 14-3 with one quarter to go. In the fourth, D'Youville scored three more times to push their lead to 14 with 5:10 left in regulation. STAC tacked on two goals in the end but was not enough to overcome the large deficit.
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) went the distance in net, making seven saves. During the game, Stworzydlak eclipsed the 600-save mark in her decorated career thus far.
The Saints will be back in action next Sunday, April 13th, as they host No. 23 Mercy University for an 11 a.m. game.
