Gordon Scores Four as Saints Fall to No. 25 Mercy

BUFFALO, N.Y. – To close out the weekend, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team fell to No. 25 Mercy University Sunday afternoon by a score of 21-6.
 
The Saints (4-6, 1-2 ECC) were led offensively by Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) with four goals with Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) adding one goal and one assist. On the defensive end, Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) caused three turnovers while also leading the team with four draw controls. Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) led the team in groundballs with three.
 
The Mavs came out of the gate, scoring a pair of goals to take the quick 2-0 lead. DYU responded with a pair of goals of their own, as Gordon lit up the net twice to make it 2-2 after seven minutes of play. The Mercy added three more goals to take the 5-2 lead, but Gordon was able to cut into the deficit to make it 5-3 with 2:04 left in the first frame. Mercy tacked on two more goals before the end of the period to lead 7-3.
 
In the second quarter, the Mavs kept the offense firing, scoring three times to extend their lead to seven goals. The Saints showed fight, scoring two in a row with Gordon and Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) scoring one apiece to make it 10-5 with 4:06 left until the half. Mercy quickly pushed the pace, gaining an eight-goal lead going into the half with the score at 13-5.
 
Coming out of the break, the Mavs took over the third quarter, outscoring D'Youville 4-0. Mercy scored four more times in the final frame, but DYU was able to get on back with a goal from Buck on the penalty.
 
Stworzydlak went the distance in net, making nine saves.
 
The Saints will begin a three-game road trip starting this Thursday, April 17th, as they travel to face No. 24 Dominican University of New York at 2 p.m.
