WILMINGTON, D.E. – The D'Youville University baseball team closed out their four-game set against Goldey-Beacom College with another close loss.
Â
Redshirt sophomore
Ryan McCarthy (Hamburg, N.Y.) made his first start of the season for the Saints and found himself in trouble in the bottom of the first after walking a pair, but he was able to get out of the jam unscathed. In the top of the second, junior
Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.) and redshirt sophomore
Cooper Cefaratti (Williamsville, N.Y.) both walked and advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Sophomore
Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) drove in Kolbert with a groundout to put DYU ahead 1-0.
Â
Junior
Kevin Del Vecchio (Niagara Falls, Ontario) singled and wiped second base to move into scoring position with one out in the top of the third. Junior
Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) brought home Del Vecchio with a double down the left field line to make it 2-0 Saints. Redshirt junior
Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) followed with a base hit to put runners at the corners. With two outs, DYU wreaked havoc on the base paths, as Morris stole home and Hollins stole second to extend their lead to 3-0.
Â
Goldey-Beacom got one run back in the bottom of the third with two hits and a sacrifice fly off McCarthy to make it 3-1. Onevelo singled and senior
Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) walked to give the Saints an opportunity to extend their lead with one out in the top of the fourth, but they were unable to score. Freshman
Jakob Denall (Clarence, N.Y.) replaced McCarthy to start the bottom of the fourth and worked around a leadoff walk to toss a scoreless frame.
Â
Back-to-back singles from Hollins and Morris to lead off the top of the fifth gave DYU a chance to distance themselves from the Lightning, but the next three batters were unable to bring them in. Goldey-Beacom got to Denall in the bottom of the fifth, driving in four runs on four hits to take a 5-3 lead.
Â
In the top of the sixth, a base hit from Crook and walks from junior
Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) and Del Vecchio loaded the bases for the Saints with one out. Morris reached on a fielder's choice to score a run and cut the Lightning's lead to 5-4. However, the next two batters punched out with the bases loaded and Goldey-Beacom remained in front.
Â
After surrendering a base hit and a walk to begin the bottom of the sixth, Denall was replaced by senior
Zach Penner (Leamington, Ontario). A sacrifice fly put the Lightning back ahead by two, but Penner was able to induce a double play to prevent further damage.
Â
In the top of the eighth, after Del Vecchio reached on an error and Hollins walked, junior
Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) singled to left center to cut the deficit to 6-5. Goldey-Beacom responded with a home run to lead off the bottom half of the inning and go back ahead by two. The Saints went down in order in the top of the ninth as Goldey-Beacom clinched the 7-5 victory.
Â
Del Vecchio, Morris, Hollins, and Onevelo all tallied multi-hit games for DYU and Morris drove in a team-high two runs. Morris recorded two hits in each game of the four-game set and tallied four RBI. McCarthy and Penner both provided strong outings on the mound for the Saints. McCarthy allowed one run on three hits and two walks in three innings and Penner surrendered one run on four hits in three innings.
Â
With the loss, D'Youville drops to 3-9 on the year and will now head to Pennsylvania for a two-game set with #17/#24 Millersville University beginning on Monday at 1:00 p.m.
