Saints Defeated by Millersville

MILLERSVILLE, P.A. – The D'Youville University baseball team was defeated by Millersville University by a score of 19-5 on Monday.

The Saints got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after a hit-by-pitch and a walk set up an RBI single from senior Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario). DYU scored their second run of the inning when Boucher got caught in a rundown between first and second base, allowing redshirt junior Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) to score before the third out was recorded.

Sophomore Mihir Manerikar (Mississauga, Ontario) got the start on the mound for the Saints. Two walks and two hit batsmen allowed Millersville to score their first run of the day. A sacrifice fly later in the inning evened the game at 2-2.

Senior Zach Penner (Leamington, Ontario) replaced Manerikar in the second inning and surrendered two runs on three hits in the frame, giving the Marauders a 4-2 lead. In the top of the third, sophomore Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) drew a leadoff walk, junior Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) singled, and Hollins walked to load the bases with one away. A wild pitch brought home Onevelo to make it 4-3. Millersville got that run back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly to go back ahead by two.

One run on one hit and an error extended the Marauders' lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. A base hit from junior Kevin Del Vecchio (Niagara Falls, Ontario) and a walk from Hollins gave DYU an opportunity to chip away at the deficit in the top of the fifth, but the Saints made two outs on the base paths to end the threat.

Millersville tagged relievers Mike Pasquarella (Hamburg, N.Y.) and Harrison Lough (Auckland, New Zealand) for seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth to blow the game open. Five more runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the seventh extended the Marauders' lead to 19-3. Senior Chris Stefan (Oakville, Ontario) navigated two walks to toss a scoreless frame for DYU in the bottom of the eighth. Redshirt sophomore Michael Huff II (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) drove in a run with a base hit and Del Vecchio walked to bring in another to make it a 19-5 game, but Millersville retired the next two batters to seal the victory.

D'Youville drops to 3-10 with the loss and will play one more with Millersville on Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
