SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The D'Youville University Men's Volleyball team closed out their weekend road trip with a thrilling four-set win over the American International College Yellowjackets on Saturday afternoon.
D'Youville University 3 at American International College 1 – (25-20, 20-25, 25-14, 36-34)
Set One
The Saints took the early lead in set one as a kill from
Spencer Boakye (Union, N.J. / Union) gave the Saints the 4-3 lead. The Saints extended their lead to 13-8 following kills from
Ian De Wilde (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) and
Peyton Planz (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Shaler Area). D'Youville's offense hit its stride early in the match and the final kills from
Ty Parker (Syracuse, N.Y. / Jamesville-Dewitt) and
Skyler Tutor (St. Cloud, FL / St. Cloud) gave the Saints the 25-20 win in set one.
Set Two
The Saints continued to coast into set two jumping out to a quick 6-2 lead. The Yellowjackets worked to stay in the game and eventually took the 9-8 lead following a three-point run. The Saints battled back capitalizing on two Yellowjackets errors to retake a 13-12 lead, but the Yellowjackets had an answer, putting up four in-a-row to lead 15-13. D'Youville fought to stay in the game, but the Yellowjackets stayed in control and took set two 25-20.
Set Three
The Saints quickly found their footing again to start the third and a kill from De Wilde along with a Yellowjackets error gave the Saints the 10-6 lead. The Saints continued to climb as
Ian De Wilde delivered another kill to put the Saints ahead 18-13. The Yellow jackets got one back, but the Saints went back on offense. D'Youville would score the next six in-a-row to take the 25-14 win in set three. The run consisted of kills from
Tymek Brzoza (Tychy, Poland) and
Ian De Wilde, blocks from Brzoza, Tutor, and De Wilde, and a service ace from
Peyton Planz.
Set Four
The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle from the start, but the Saints gained the 6-4 advantage following a kill from
Skyler Tutor and a Yellowjackets error. AIC came right back to take the 8-6 lead. As gameplay continued the Saints put together a 4-1 run to take the 13-12 lead. The set continued and it looked like the Saints had the game locked up at 23-19, but the Yellowjackets put together an impressive five-point run to take the 24-23 lead. From there, neither team could find the two-point advantage needed to end the set until the Yellowjackets found themselves ahead 34-33.
Ian De Wilde knocked down the next kill for the Saints to tie the game. A Yellowjackets error put D'Youville ahead and another kill from De Wilde gave the Saints the 36-34 win in set four and the 3-1 match win.
