NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – The D'Youville University baseball team dropped the final two games of their series with St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday.
Â
St. Thomas Aquinas 15, D'Youville 6
Â
Freshman
Ty Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y.) got the start on the mound in game one for the Saints and allowed a run in the top of the first inning on a double steal to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. DYU answered back in the bottom of the first when sophomore
Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) singled and junior
Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) doubled. Onevelo came in to score on a groundout from junior
Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) and Morris stole home to put the Saints in front 2-1.
Â
St. Thomas Aquinas tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second after a leadoff double and a wild pitch plated the tying run. Junior
Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) walked to lead off the bottom of the second and moved into scoring position on a base hit from redshirt sophomore
Jacob Cooper (Erie, Pa.). Onevelo drove in Wilson with a single down the right field line to put DYU back in front 3-2.
Â
In the bottom of the fifth, the Saints extended their lead to 5-2 on a pair of RBI singles from redshirt junior
Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Boucher. Graczyk had thrown three consecutive scoreless frames until the top of the sixth, when St. Thomas Aquinas drove in two runs to cut DYU's lead back down to one and knock Graczyk out of the game. Freshman
Jakob Denall (Clarence, N.Y.) replaced him and stranded the bases loaded to keep DYU in front.
Â
However, the Spartans capitalized on defensive miscues by the Saints in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on two hits and three errors to take a 9-5 lead. They added four more in the top of the eighth and two in the ninth and went on to take game one by a score of 15-6. Onevelo collected a career-high three hits, while Boucher, Morris, Cooper, and senior
Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) all recorded multi-hit games as well.

St. Thomas Aquinas got on the board first again in game two after an error led to an RBI single to give them a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Saints' starter redshirt sophomore
Ryan McCarthy (Hamburg, N.Y.) settled down to toss scoreless frames in the second and third inning, but the Spartans pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0.
Â
A walk and a single to start the top of the sixth marked the end of McCarthy's day, as junior
Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.) took the ball from him in relief. St. Thomas Aquinas tacked on three runs in the inning to make it 6-0.
Â
After Boucher and Wilson led off the bottom of the seventh with singles, Cooper was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Then, Crook was plunked to bring in DYU's first run of the game. Onevelo followed with a walk to bring in another run and cut the deficit to 6-2. The Saints drew closer in the bottom of the eighth when Kolbert drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-3 game.
Â
Down to their final out in the bottom of the ninth, Hollins walked, Morris singled, and Boucher was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wilson then knocked a base hit down the left field line to score more runs and cut the Spartans' lead to 6-5 and put the tying run just ninety feet away. However, the next batter was retired and St. Thomas Aquinas sealed the win and series split.
Â
Wilson recorded three hits in game two and has now collected a hit in six-straight games. Boucher tallied two hits in both ends of the doubleheader and has recorded a hit in nine of his last ten games.
Â
D'Youville now holds a 6-21 overall record and a 2-2 mark in the ECC. They will travel to Clarion University for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
