ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The D'Youville University women's lacrosse team was defeated in their conference opener against Roberts Wesleyan University by a score of 14-5.
Senior
Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y.) led the Saints' offense with one goal and three assists. Junior
Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) scored a team-high two goals, while senior
Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y.) and junior
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) each scored one goal. On defense, senior
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) recorded 14 saves and freshman
BreeLynn LaLonde (Theresa, N.Y.) tallied a team-high two groundballs.
Roberts Wesleyan got on the board first, but DYU answered back with a goal from Handley to make it 1-1 at the 11:42 mark in the first quarter. The Redhawks scored two straight goals to go in front 3-1, but Handley scored her second goal of the day to cut the deficit to 3-2 with 2:13 remaining in the quarter.
After Roberts Wesleyan scored to extend their lead to 4-2 early in the second quarter, Gordon found Buck for a goal to make it a one-score game again with 4:18 remaining until halftime. The Redhawks scored with 2:15 left in the quarter to take a 5-3 advantage going into halftime.
Roberts Wesleyan scored four straight goals to begin the third quarter and create a six-goal difference between them and the Saints. With 5:08 remaining in the quarter, Gordon scored on an assist from freshman
Iylan Fowler (Horseheads, N.Y.) to put a stop to the run and make it a 9-4 game. The Redhawks would respond with a goal three minutes later to take a 10-4 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Four-straight goals to start the fourth quarter gave Roberts Wesleyan a 14-4 advantage. Gordon connected with Fischer for a goal to make it 14-5 with 4:35 left in regulation. This score would hold for the remainder of the contest, and the Redhawks went on to seal the victory.
With the loss, D'Youville drops to 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in the ECC. They will be back in action on April 2
nd, when they face Lake Erie College on the road at 6:00 p.m.
