BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville Women's Lacrosse team closed out their three-game homestand with a 17-12 loss to Saint Anselm College on Saturday morning.
The Saints (2-4) were led on offense by
Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) who recorded 6 points including five goals and one assist. Both
Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y. / St. Mary's) and
Danielle Gephart (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) recorded two assists.
Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y. / Jamesville-Dewitt) had another consistent showing leading the Saints with eight draw controls.
On the defensive side,
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) recorded 12 saves in goal while Lauren parker recorded two caused turnovers and
BreeLynn LaLonde (Theresa, N.Y. / Indian River) led the Saints with four ground balls.
The Saints took the lead first after
Lily Buckley (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) picked up the ground ball to give the Saints possession and
Madison Handley netted one from
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y. / Churchville Chili) just four and a half minutes into the game. Just forty seconds later, Saint Anselm tied the game and then netted two more to take the 3-1 lead.
Jillian Bernas and
Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y. / Mount St. Mary's Academy) score back-to-back to tie the game at three. From there, both teams capitalized on offense, but the first quarter ended in a 5-5 tie after
Madison Handley scored her third goal of the game with just a minute and a half remaining in the quarter.
The Hawks gained the advantage quickly in the second quarter jumping out to an 8-5 lead, but a goal from
Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y. / Hamburg) brought the Saints within two. Saint Anselm would net two more before the end of the quarter putting them ahead 10-6 at halftime.
The third quarter began scoreless as Stworzydlak recorded three saves and
Madison Buck scored to bring the Saints within three at 10-7.
Madison Handley would score her fourth of the game while
Iylan Fowler (Horseheads, N.Y. / Horseheads) would score in the last 23 seconds to leave D'Youville trailing 14-9 by the end of the third quarter.
Saint Anselm scored the first three goals in the final quarter to reach 17-9.
Madison Handley,
Sydney Gordon, and
Madison Buck would all each score one more to bring the score to 17-12, but the clock ran out and Saint Anselm would take the win.
