PHILADELPHIA, P.A. – The D'Youville University baseball team got back in the win column in a doubleheader split with Holy Family University on Thursday.
D'Youville 6, Holy Family 1
The Saints struck first in game one when junior
Garett Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) slugged his first home run of the season to make it 1-0 in the top of the second. Junior
Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) toed the rubber for DYU and struck out two in the bottom of the second to keep it a 1-0 game.
After junior
Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) drew a walk with one out in the top of the fourth, junior
Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.) ripped a double to right center to bring home Simpson and extend the Saints' lead to 2-0.
In the top of the fifth, DYU put the hammer down. Redshirt sophomore
Aidan Albano (West Seneca, N.Y.) doubled to lead off the inning and came in to score on an RBI single from senior
Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) to make it 3-0. Crook then came in to score on a base hit from senior
Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) to make it 4-0. Junior
Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) brought in two more runs with a double to increase the Saints' lead to 6-0.
Two hits, a walk, and an error netted Holy Family their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. That's all they could muster, though, as Morris retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the 6-1 victory for DYU. Morris went the distance and recorded seven strikeouts while allowing just one earned run on four hits and two walks.
Garett Wilson and Crook both posted multi-hit games.
Holy Family 13, D'Youville 10
The Saints got off to a hot start in game two when Boucher and Morris hit back-to-back jacks to go ahead 2-0 in the top of the first. Holy Family answered with two runs on three hits and an error against DYU starter
Ty Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y.).
In the top of the second, singles from sophomore
Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.), Crook, and Boucher loaded the bases with two outs. Then, Morris came through again, knocking a base hit into left to bring in two runs and put the Saints back in front 4-2. Once again, Holy Family responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to level the game at 4-4.
After
Colby Wilson walked and
Garett Wilson doubled to put runners at second and third, Onevelo drove in a run with a groundout to give DYU a 5-4 lead in the top of the third. The Saints tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth when Morris went deep for the second time to make it 7-4.
In the top of the fifth, Onevelo led off the inning with a double and came in to score on a sacrifice fly from Crook to make it 8-5. Later in the inning, Boucher drew a walk and came al the way around to score on errors by the catcher and center fielder on a stolen base to extend DYU's lead to 9-5. The Saints added one more in the top of the sixth when
Garett Wilson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 10-5.
Things unraveled for DYU in the bottom of the sixth, though, as Holy Family scored eight runs on five hits to take a 13-10 lead. Boucher and Simpson both singled in the top of the seventh to try to mount a last-chance rally, but neither of them were able to score, and Holy Family secured the victory.
Boucher and Morris each collected three hits and Morris drove in five runs. D'Youville's record moves to 4-17 and they will play another doubleheader with Holy Family on Friday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
