Simpson and Wilson Go Yard, But Saints are Swept in Doubleheader with Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA, P.A. – The D'Youville University baseball team was swept in their doubleheader with Holy Family University on Friday.

Holy Family 17, D'Youville 11

The Saints got on the board immediately when senior Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) came all the way around to score on an error to leadoff the game. A hit-by-pitch and two walks loaded the bases for DYU with two outs and junior Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) drew a walk to bring in another run and make it 2-0. Holy Family responded with three runs off DYU starter Chris Auclair (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers got to Auclair again in the bottom of the second, tagging him for four runs on five hits to extend their lead to 7-2. The Saints got a couple runs back in the top of the third when junior Garett Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) homered for the second time in as many days to cut the deficit to 7-4. The Holy Family offense continued its onslaught in the bottom of the third with two runs on two hits and two errors to go back ahead by five.

In the top of the fifth, DYU loaded the bases after junior Blaise Kolbert (Lancaster, N.Y.) reached on an error, Garett Wilson was hit by a pitch, and Colby Wilson singled. Sophomore Derek Onevelo (Buffalo, N.Y.) drove in a run with a base hit to make it 9-5, but the Saints were unable to score any more runs in the inning.

Holy Family put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth, scoring seven runs on four hits and five hit-by-pitches to extend their lead to 16-5. DYU did not go down quietly, scoring one run in the sixth and five in the seventh, but the Tigers ultimately sealed the victory by a score of 17-11.

Holy Family 5, D'Youville 4

The Saints got on the board first again in game two when redshirt sophomore Aidan Albano (West Seneca, N.Y.) got caught in a rundown, allowing Garett Wilson to score the first run of the game. Freshman Jakob Denall (Clarence, N.Y.) got the start on the mound for DYU. He struck out a pair in the bottom of the second, but two two-out hits gave Holy Family a 2-1 lead.

The Saints loaded the bases to start the top of the third after redshirt Cooper Cefaratti (Williamsville, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch and Crook and senior Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) singled. Sacrifice flies from junior Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y.) and junior Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) put DYU back in front 3-2.

Denall worked around a one-out triple in the bottom of the fourth to pitch a scoreless frame, striking out two, to keep the game at 3-2. The Saints tacked on a run in the top of the sixth when Simpson clubbed his second home run of the season to make it 4-2. However, the Tigers tied the game with two runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Holy Family walked it off with an RBI single off Kolbert to win the game and the series.

Denall turned in the best performance of his career thus far, striking out eight and allowing just two earned runs on seven hits and one walk in six innings pitched. Simpson drove in four runs across both games and Garett Wilson collected four hits.

D'Youville drops to 4-19 on the year with the losses. They will now set their sights on the ECC, as they begin a four-game series with St. Thomas Aquinas College at Sal Maglie Stadium next Friday at 3:00 p.m.
