GREENSBURG, P.A. – The D'Youville University baseball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against Seton Hill University on Friday.
Â
Seton Hill 3, D'Youville 0
Â
Redshirt junior
Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led off the game with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from junior
Kevin Del Vecchio (Niagara Falls, Ontario), but the next two batters were unable to bring him in. Senior
Chris Auclair (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) got the start on the mound for the Saints. A walk, double, and sacrifice fly brought across two runs for Seton Hill in the bottom of the first, but Auclair struck out the last two batters of the inning to avoid further damage.
Â
In the top of the second, singles from junior
Jonathan Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y.) and junior
Colby Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) put runners at first and second for DYU with one away, but they were unable to score. Auclair navigated two base hits to toss a scoreless frame in the bottom of the second. However, two hits led to a sacrifice fly to extend Seton Hill's lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third.
Â
In the top of the fourth, senior
Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario) and Wilson both drew walks and Simpson collected his second hit of the day to load the bases, but once again the Saints were unable to break through, and the score remained 3-0. Auclair retired the Griffins in order and punched out two batters in the bottom of the fourth. He tossed a scoreless fifth and sixth as well to finish with a line of six strikeouts, three walks, six hits, and three earned runs in six innings pitched.
Â
DYU tried to mount a last gasp effort in the top of the seventh when redshirt sophomore
Cooper Cefaratti (Williamsville, N.Y.) and senior
Dillon Crook (Liverpool, N.Y.) both singled with two outs, but Hollins was retired to seal the victory for Seton Hill.
Â
Seton Hill 20, D'Youville 2
Â
The Griffins jumped out to a 4-0 lead on four hits and two walks against Saints' starter
Ty Graczyk (Buffalo, N.Y.) in the bottom of the first inning. Graczyk bounced back to retire the side in order in the bottom of the second. DYU threatened to get on the board in the top of the third after Crook singled and Cefaratti walked, but they were unable to score.
Â
In the top of the fourth,
Colby Wilson doubled and junior
Garett Wilson (Webster, N.Y.) singled to set up a scoring chance for the Saints. A wild pitch scored Wilson to make it a 4-1 game, but DYU was unable to push any more runs across.
Â
Five hits off Graczyk brought in three runs for Seton Hill in the bottom of the fourth and ended Graczyk's day. Junior
Austin Delgado (Orlando, Fla.) took the ball and surrendered one more run in the inning to extend the Griffins' lead to 8-1. A base hit from Del Vecchio and a walk from Cefaratti set up a rally for the Saints in the top of the fifth, but they were unable to bring either of them home.
Â
Seton Hill added to their lead with four runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth to increase their lead to 12-1. A
Colby Wilson single and a
Garett Wilson walk set up an RBI single from redshirt sophomore
Michael Huff II (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) to make it a 12-2 game. The Griffins scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh and tacked on five more in the eighth to go on to win 20-2.
Â
With the loss, D'Youville falls to 3-13 on the year. They will play another doubleheader against Seton Hill on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
