SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Closing out their New England road trip, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team exterminated American International College by a score of 21 -5 to secure their first win of the season. D'Youville's 21 goals set a team game record for goals scored which happened in two previous games throughout the team's history.
The Saints (1-2) were led offensively by
Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) with nine points (7 goals, 2 assists) and
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y./Churchville Chili) with seven points (5 goals, 2 assists).
Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and
Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's) each had solid games with three goals and two assists each.
Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) got the offense started, setting a new single game record of 12 draw controls won.
Isabela Dombrowski (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) led the team in groundballs with three while Handley led the team in caused turnovers with two.
The Saints came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, scoring the game's first four goals. Buck was the top contributor, scoring three of the goals. After a goal from the Yellowjackets, DYU caught fire once again with four unanswered goals. This time, Handley led the way with a pair of goals. AIC was able to get one back, but Handley answered to make it 9-2 after the first quarter of play.
Handley kept the momentum going for DYU, scoring two more times to outscore the Yellowjackets 4-1 in the second frame as D'Youville took a commanding 13-3 lead into halftime.
DYU picked up where they left off to start the second half as Bernas scored her third goal of the outing followed by another goal from Buck to make it 15-3. The team's traded goals to close out the third quarter as D'Youville remained in front by a score of 17-5.
In the fourth quarter, it was all Saints as they outscored AIC by a 4-0 margin. Highlighting the scoring running was freshman
Iylan Fowler (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) who scored her first collegiate goal.
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) went the distance in net, making eight saves on the day.
The Saints will return home for a three-game homestand this Sunday, March 16th, as they host Franklin Pierce University I their home opener at 11 a.m.
