PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Looking to get back in the win column, the D'Youville University men's lacrosse team did just that with an 11-10 win over Holy Family University Wednesday evening.
The Saints (4-4) were led by
Stefano Evan (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) with six points (3 goals, 3 assists) with
Obrigh Tallchief (Irving, N.Y./Lake Shore) adding four points (3 goals, 1 assist).
Nick Sholett (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) and
Brady Ruffalo (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) each got double digit points with three and points, respectively.
On the defensive end,
Logan Schwartz (Depew, N.Y./Depew) caused five turnovers while grabbing a team-leading eight groundballs.
Jake Bush (Lakeview, N.Y./Frontier) also had a knack for the loose ball, grabbing five groundballs.
DYU came out firing, scoring the first tow goals with Tallchief and Sholett getting on the board. The Tigers answered back with a pair of goals themselves. Evan scored his first goal to close out the frame as D'Youville took a 3-2 lead after the first.
To start the second quarter, HFU scored two straight to get a 4-3 lead.
Carsyn Kent (Whitby, Ontario/Donald A. Wilson Secondary) knotted the game up before the break as the teams were deadlocked at 4-4.
Picking up in the second half, the Tigers scored back-to-back goals to take the 6-4 lead. The Saints were able to flip a switch, scoring four unanswered goals to take an 8-6 lead. Evan bookended the scoring for D'Youville with the last coming with 35 seconds left in the quarter.
Heading into the fourth, HFU tied the game up at 8-8 with a pair of goals. Tallchief broke the tie with Evan finding him for the goal. The game went back and forth with the Tigers tying the game and the Saints getting the one-goal lead. The difference in the game came when Tallchief found
Jonathan Abbarno (Chargin Falls, Ohio/Kenston) on the man-up goal with 3:03 left in regulation to get the win.
Casey Berns (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) played 59 minutes in net, making 18 saves on the night.
William Nichols (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) closed out the game, making one save.
The Saints will start conference play this Saturday, March 15th, as they travel to Frostburg State University for a 1 p.m. game.
