Men’s Volleyball Survives Central State in Five-Set Thriller

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Men's Volleyball team found their way back to the win column after defeating Central State University 3-2 on Thursday night in the Saints Center Gym.

Set One
The Marauders got off to a hot start on Thursday evening as they quickly jumped up 9-7 to start the match. Kills from Ian De Wilde (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) and Skyler Tutor (St. Cloud, FL / St. Cloud) tied the score at nine. De Wilde recorded three service aces in a row to give the Saints their first lead of the game and another kill from Tutor put D'Youville ahead 13-9. The Saints did not look back and continued to climb as Spencer Boakye (Union, N.J. / Union) delivered the kill to give DYU the 24-18 game point lead. The Marauders got one back, but a Central State serving error gave the Saints the 25-19 win in set one.

Set Two
Central State again took the early lead in set two, but a kill from Tymek Brzoza (Tychy, Poland) tied the set at five. As gameplay continued the score tied again at eight, but an ace from Jacob Malak (Wales, Wisc. / Kettle Moraine) gave the Saints back the advantage. The Marauders fought to stay in the set but kills from four different Saints helped propel them to a 25-23 win in set two.

Set Three
The third set was close from the jump with the lead going back and forth as a kill from Tymek Brzoza tied the score at 15. The Marauders took the lead, but the Saints fought to stay within one. Central State began to extend their lead as they jumped ahead 24-21. The Saints got two back off Marauder errors, but Central State would take the third set 25-23 to stay alive.

Set Four
Central State carried their momentum into the fourth set quickly jumping up 3-0, but a kill and an ace from De Wilde along with a Marauder error tied the score. The Saints took control after capitalizing on two Central State errors as well as a kill from Jacob Malak to take the 7-5 lead. As the Saints continued to climb, the Marauders found their footing putting up a 7-2 run to take the 15-13 lead. From there, Central State controlled the game until they took set four 25-22.

Set Five
The Saints found their footing to begin the fifth set and quickly got out to a 5-1 lead. An ace from Skyler Tutor along with two Central State errors gave the Saints the 9-4 lead. De Wilde and Tutor each recorded one more kill in the set before the Saints took set five 15-10 and the match 3-2.
