AMHERST, N.Y. – Heading down the road for a midweek match up, the D'Youville University men's basketball team fell to No. 2/4 Daemen University by a score of 88-56 Thursday evening.
The Saints (2-14, 0-7 ECC) were led by
Jaylin Simmons (Queens, N.Y./Benjamin Cardozo) with a career-high 16 points.
Justin Moore (Oxford, Ala./Oxford) led the team on the glass with five rebounds.
Facing against one of the top teams in the country, DYU held strong in the first four minutes of the game, getting back-to-back buckets from Moore to give the team an early 6-5 lead. From there, the Wildcats used a 21-2 run to take control with 9:28 left until halftime. From that point, the teams went tic-for-tat as they each scored 24 points with Daemen taking a 45-26 lead into the break.
Coming out of the half, the Saints went on a 6-4 run to close the deficit to 17 points with 15:34 left in regulation. During the run,
Kevin Thompson (Buffalo, N.Y./Bishop Timon-St. Jude) accounted for four points including a three-pointer off the dish from
TI Scruggs (Huntsville, Ala./Hazel Green). Daemen used another strong run over the next five minutes to help keep the Saints at bay.
DYU went 22-for-62 (35.5 percent) from the floor while Daemen went 36-for-66 (54.5 percent) from the field. The Wildcats also had the advantage on the glass, grabbing 50 rebounds to the Saints' 27 rebounds.
D'Youville will be off until next Wednesday, January 22nd, as they return home to host Roberts Wesleyan University at 7:45 p.m.
