BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Volleyball Team moves to 2-0 in conference play after an exciting 3-1 win over the Mercy University Mavericks.
D'Youville University 3 vs Mercy University 1 – (25-23, 25-16, 28-30, 25-15)
Set One
The Mavericks got on top quickly in the first set jumping up 8-3, but the Saints slowly worked their way back as a kill from
Maddy O'Brien (East Amherst, N.Y. / Clarence) and a Maverick error brought the Saints within two at 12-10. The Saints put together a four-point run to take the 14-13 lead. Gameplay continued with the lead going back and forth until it was tied at 20. A kill from O'Brien along with an ace from
Mitha Hatwar (Columbus, OH / Olentangy Liberty) helped aid another four-point run for the Saints as they reached game point at 24-20. Mercy managed three points before an error gave the Saints the 25-23 win in set one.
Set Two
It was all Saints offense to start set two as D'Youville quickly took the 10-5 lead. The Mavericks put together a solid run to tie the game at 11, but the Saints offense picked back up. Kills from
Alex Darby (Huntington, WV / Spring Valley) and
Cameron Ulinski (Parkland, FL / Marjory Stoneman Douglas) along with an ace from
Emma Wlostowski (Alden, N.Y. / Alden) propelled the Saints to a 16-11 lead. DYU continued to climb and kills from Darby and Ulinski again helped bring the Saints to a 25-16 win in set two.
Set Three
The third set was the most competitive of the day with the score quickly tying at eight following a kill from Maddy O'Brien. The Saints found themselves in the lead at 14-13 following kills from
Samantha Killane (Vero Beach, FL / Lincoln Park Academy),
Alex Darby, and
Cameron Ulinski. Gameplay continued back and forth as both teams found the score tied at 21. The Saints fell behind at 27-26, but a kill from Hatwar and an error from Mercy gave the Saints the 28-27 lead. The Mavericks would go on to score the three final points of the set to win 30-28.
Set Four
Mercy carried their momentum in the fourth set jumping up 6-1, but the Saints worked their way back as back-to-back kills from Maddy O'Brien, and
Giselle Ramirez (Miami, FL / School for Advanced Studies) tied the game at 10. The Saints took the lead at 13-12 and extended to 21-13 following a 9-1 run. Killane recorded four aces in the run along with a kill from
Alex Darby. Hatwar and Darby recorded the final two kills for the Saints to give the 25-15 win in set four and the 3-1 match win.
Graduate Student
Emma Wlostowski reached her 1,000th career dig in the match while Senior
Samantha Killane recorded her 100th career service ace.

The Saints are on the road next weekend for two more ECC Conference games. D'Youville will face-off against Molloy University on Saturday at noon before playing Queens College on Sunday at 12/;00 PM.
