DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Baseball team moves to 28-17 and 17-5 in the East Coast Conference following a pair of wins at Mercy University this afternoon. The Saints extended their win streak to ten games following a 3-1 win in game one and an 8-5 win in game two.
Game One – D'Youville University 3 at Mercy University 1
Coming off eight straight games, the Saints looked to continue their win streak on the road for their final weekend of the regular season. Game one was a pitchers battle with the Mavericks managing to put a run on the board in the third inning following a sacrifice fly. The Saints defense shut down the Mavericks for the rest of the game, but the offense struggled to cross a run.
In the top of the ninth, the Saints found their footing at the plate and after
Jeremy Glinski (Sloan, N.Y. / Bishop-Timon St. Jude) led off the inning with a walk,
Jon Simpson (Grand Island, N.Y. / Grand Island) stepped up nailing a triple to left center field to score Glinski and tie the game at one.
Hunter Nowak (Hamburg, N.Y. / St. Francis) came up next with a double down the left field line to score Simpson and give the Saints the 2-1 lead. The offense was not done yet, and
Alex Dzimian (Lakeview, N.Y. / St. Francis) singled to shortstop to score Nowak and give the Saints the 3-1 lead.
With just the bottom of the ninth left to play, Senior
Samuel Worthen (Guelph, Ontario / Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute) came in for the Saints on the mound and held the Mavericks giving the Saints the 3-1 win in game one. Worthen earned his 12th save of the season in the win.
Chris Auclair (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) started the game on the mound for D'Youville throwing six complete innings, recording five strikeouts, and only allowing four hits.
Zach Penner (Leamington, Ontario / Cardinal Center) got the win for the Saints throwing the eighth inning allowing one hit and striking out one.
Game Two – D'Youville University 8 at Mercy University 5 – 7 Innings
After two scoreless innings to start the second game, the Saints found their way on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning.
Jake Hollins (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) came up with a two-out double and
Billy Morris (Lancaster, N.Y. / Lancaster) doubled down the right field line to score Hollins and put the Saints up 1-0.
Hollins stayed hot knocking a triple to right centerfield in the top of the fifth and
Jeremy Glinski singled to score Hollins and put the Saints up 2-0. The Mavericks found their footing in the bottom of the fifth and tied the game at two. The Mavericks kept their momentum on offense and tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the 4-2 lead.
With their last chance on offense in the top of the seventh,
Alex Dzimian,
Jake Hollins, and
Billy Morris all singled to load the bases with one out. Glinski walked to bring in a run and
Alec Boucher (Essex, Ontario / St Thomas of Villanova) singled to score two more and give the Saints the 5-4 lead. Glinski scored the another run for the Saints on a wild pitch and
Craig Oliver (Fredericton, New Brunswick / Fredericton) recorded the final hit for the Saints to bring in the two final runs for the Saints, putting them ahead 8-4. The Mavericks got one back in the bottom of the inning, but
Samuel Worthen came in to shut down the Mavericks again earning his 13
th save the of the season in D'Youville's 8-5 win over the Mavericks.
Billy Morris got the start in game two for D'Youville throwing 6.1 innings and striking out four.
Connor Joedicke (Bloomville, N.Y. / Margaretville Central) got the win for the Saints throwing 1.2 innings in relief and
Samuel Worthen came in for the final out of the game recording his thirteenth save of the season, placing him in a tie for second for most saves in NCAA Division II baseball.
