BUFFALO, N.Y. – Playing int their final nonconference game of the 2024 season, the D'Youville University men's lacrosse team fell to Walsh University by a score of 15-9 Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (1-12) were led offensively by
Nick Sholett (Vestal, N.Y.) with a career-high four goals with
Luciano Gonzalez (Coquitlam, British Columbia) also scoring a career-high three goals.
Stefano Evan (Vestal, N.Y.) added two points (1 goal, 1 assist) while
Brady Ruffalo (Webster, N.Y.) added one goal.
Jordan Brown (Baltimore, Md.) led the team in groundballs with eight while
Cameron Fogarty (Selinsgrove, Pa.) added four.
Logan Schwartz (Depew, N.Y.) continues his strong season, causing four turnovers.
The Cavaliers scored the first goal of the game before Gonzalez and Sholett scored two quick ones for DYU to take the 2-1 lead at the 11:29 mark of the first quarter. Walsh responded, scoring three straight to take the 4-2 lead. Ruffalo cut the deficit to one, scoring with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.
Walsh started the second with a goal to make it 5-3 before Gonzalez netted his second goal of the day at the 6:42 mark of the frame to make it 5-4. The Cavaliers added one more goal to take the 6-4 lead into the break.
Coming out of the half, Walsh scored three straight before Sholett scored his second goal to make it 9-5 with 6:18 remaining in the third quarter. The Cavaliers went on another 3-0 run before it was halted by Gonzalez off the dish from Evan to make it 12-6 in the frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Cavaliers started scoring before Evan found the back of the net to help cut -the deficit by making it 14-7 with 11:16 in the frame. Sholett added two more goals in the quarter to close out the scoring for DYU.
William Nichols (Palmyra, N.Y.) saw most the action in net, making 17 saves in the effort.
The Saints will be back in action next Saturday, April 13th, as they travel to the University of the District of Columbia for a 12 p.m. start.
