WASHINGTON, D.C. – Making their trip down south to our nation's capital, the D'Youville University men's lacrosse team powered past the University of the District of Columbia by a score of 12-6 Saturday afternoon.
The Saints (2-12, 1-3 ECC) were led offensively by
Stefano Evan (Vestal, N.Y.) with six points (4 goals, 2 assists) with
Jake Bush (Lakeview, N.Y.) adding three points (1 goal, 2 assists).
Brady Ruffalo (Webster, N.Y.) and
Luciano Gonzalez (Coquitlam, British Columbia) each scored twice to go along with three other Saints that found the back of the net.
Jordan Brown (Baltimore, Md.) had a strong day in the circle, going 20-for-22 (90.1 percent) while grabbing 11 groundballs.
Brody Strong (Gores Landing, Ontario) had a solid game, grabbing a career-high 10 groundballs while causing two turnovers.
Logan Schwartz (Depew, N.Y.) led the team in caused turnovers.
Strong got the scoring going early in the first, making it a 1-0 lead after five minutes of action. The Firebirds responded with a goal of their own with just under two minutes left in the frame but a pass from Bush to
Tyler Vohwinkel (Buffalo, N.Y.) made it 2-1.
In the second quarter, Ruffalo made it a 3-1 game off the assist from
Suman Ramlall (Atlanta, Ga.). UDC got one back with 10 minutes left until the break, but Evan made it a two-goal game once again with 5:51 until halftime. The Firebirds added one more before the break to make it 4-3 in favor of the Saints.
Coming out of halftime, UDC tied the game up just two minutes into the third quarter. DYU responded, scoring four unanswered goals to make it 8-4. Gonzalez scored the first two goals capped off by a pair of goals by Evan. The Firebirds halted the run with a goal at the 4:19 mark of the quarter to make it 8-5 in favor of the Saints.
The Saints kept the momentum going into the final frame of regulation, scoring four more unanswered goals. During the run, Ruffalo, Bush, Evan, and
Carsyn Kent (Whitby, Ontario) each found the back of the net to make it 12-5 and put the game out of reach.
William Nichols (Palmyra, N.Y.) earned the win in net, making seven saves on the day.
DYU will be back in action next Saturday, April 20th, as they host No. 16 Frostburg State University for their regular season home finale at 1 p.m.
