Valiant Effort Falls Short Against No. 16 Frostburg State

BUFFALO, N.Y. – In their final home game of the 2024 season, the D'Youville University men's lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with No. 16 Frostburg State University but fell by a score of 14-10.

The Saints (2-13, 1-4 ECC) were led offensively by Nick Sholett (Vestal, N.Y.) with a career-high six goals to goal along with one assist. Luciano Gonzalez (Colquitlam, British Columbia) finished the day with three points (1 goal, 2 assists) with Carsyn Kent (Whitby, Ontario) adding two goals. Tyler Vohwinkel (Buffalo, N.Y.) added the other goal for DYU.

Logan Schwartz (Depew, N.Y.) continues his strong season with five groundballs and five caused turnovers. Jordan Brown (Baltimore, Md.) also had five groundballs on the day.

The Bobcats got on the scoreboard first, but Sholett answered with his first goal of the day to tie it up 1-1 at the 12:38 mark of the first quarter. FSU added two more goals, but Sholett's second goal made it 3-2 with 9:24 left in the frame.

The teams traded goals over the next three minutes of action with Sholett scoring his third goal of the game off the feed from Brady Ruffalo (Webster, N.Y.) to make it 4-3. The Bobcats pushed their lead out to 6-3 but Vohwinkel cut it to a two-goal game with 51 seconds with a goal off the assist from Gonzalez.

FSU extended their lead by five in the early goings of the second quarter before Kent got on the board. The Bobcats scored one late in the half to take a 10-5 lead into the break.

The teams once again traded goals with Sholett scoring his fourth goal of the game followed by Kent's second goal to make it 10-7 with 8:46 left to play in the third quarter. FSU made it a five-goal game in the quarter but back-to-back goals by Sholett helped cut the deficit to three goals going into the final frame of regulation.

In the fourth quarter, a man-up goal by Gonzalez just 26 seconds into the frame to make it a 12-10 game was the only offense the Saints were able to find in the valiant effort.

William Nichols (Palmyra, N.Y.) went the distance in net, making 13 saves on the afternoon.

The Saints will wrap up the regular season next Saturday, April 27th, as they travel to No. 6 Mercy University for a 1 p.m. game.
