Saints Fall to Top Conference Opponent Saint Francis

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The D'Youville University Saints Men's Volleyball team fell 3-1 to RV Saint Francis University on Friday night at the College Center.

Set One
Matchplay started close between the Red Flash and the Saints on Friday with Saint Francis leading 6-5. A SFU error, a kill by Tymek Brzoza (Tychy, Poland), and a serving ace from Jacob Malak (Wales, Wisc. / Kettle Moraine) put the Saints up by two. D'Youville continued to climb with SFU staying close until they scored three-in-a-row to tie the game at 19. The lead went back and forth, but another SFU error along with another ace from Malak put the Saints up 23-21. A final kill from Haven Wankerl (Cross Plains, Wisc. / Middleton) gave the Saints the 25-23 win in set one.

Set Two
The Saints took their momentum into set two jumping up 4-1 after kills from Malak and Ian De Wilde (Lockport, N.Y. / Starpoint) and climbing to 7-4 after errors from the Red Flash. SFU fought back to tie the game at nine. Gameplay stayed close, but back-to-back kills from De Wilde put the Saints up 18-15.

Saint Francis took the lead after a three-point run at 20-19. Jacob Malak had the final two kills for the Saints before SFU took set two 25-23.

Set Three
The fight continued between the two teams as set three began and the score quickly tied at seven. SFU managed a six-point run to jump ahead 13-7. The Saints worked to stay in the set scoring three-in-a-row with Jacob Malak recording all three kills, but a final kill from Saint Francis would give them the 25-17 win in set three.

Set Four
D'Youville closely trailed to start set four with a kill from Ian De Wilde bringing the Saints within one at 8-7. Saint Francis went on a three-point run to extend their lead and would go on a four-point run shortly after to put them ahead 18-12.
The Saints put together two different three-point runs to bring them within two at 22-20, but SFU would score the last three to win set four 25-20 and the match 3-1.

Saints Stats
The Saints outscored the Red Flash in digs at 47-34. Ian De Wilde led the Saints offense with 18 kills followed by Jacob Malak who recorded 12. Randy Adorno (Bayamon, Puerto Rico / Winter Park) had another strong showing with 35 assists and nine digs.
