11 Saints Score as Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past UDC

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Closing out the 2024 regular season, the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team came away with a 21-2 win over the University of the District of Columbia Saturday afternoon.
 
The Saints (7-9, 4-2 ECC) tied a program-best 21 goals with Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) and Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) each scoring four goals. Emily Fischer (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) each added three goals with seven other players each tallying a goal. Jordan Pachla (Grand Island, N.Y.), Lauren Parker (Syracuse, N.Y.), Lauren Smithers (Williamsville, N.Y.), and Lily Buckley (Orchard Park, N.Y.) each record their first career goals.
 
Jillian Bernas (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) facilitated the offense, finishing with six assists with Handley and Buck each adding five assists. Parker got the offense started, winning 10 draw controls.
 
On the defensive end, Buck and Parker led the way with five groundballs each with Handley causing two turnovers.
 
DYU opened the game up on a 10-0 run with nine goals coming in the first quarter. Buck got the scoring going, finding the back of the net just 29 seconds into the game. Newlin scored back-to-back goals to make it a 3-0 game at the 11:54 mark of the quarter. Handley got on the board followed by Newlin's third goal and a pair of goals from Fischer. Handley scored the final goal of the first quarter followed by goals from Newlin and Parker to make it 10-0.
 
The Firebirds got on the board early in the second quarter, but the Saints took a commanding 13-1 lead into the break with goals from Handley, Fischer, and Buck.
 
DYU came out of the break remaining hot, taking the 17-1 lead. Handley, Buck, Bernas and Danielle Gephart (Eden, N.Y.) scored during the opening stretch. UDC added their second goal at the 4:34 mark of the third quarter but the Saints closed the game out strong, scoring four unanswered with goals from Buckley, Pachla, Grace Grosso (Hull, Mass.), and Smithers.
 
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) earned the win in net, making two saves in 30 minutes. Fantasy Jimerson-Kenjockety (Seneca Nation, N.Y.) went the rest of the way, making three saves.
 
The Saints will now turn their attention to the ECC Championships, facing Mercy University next Thursday, May 2nd, at a time to be determined.
