DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The 2024 season came to a close Thursday afternoon for the D'Youville University women's lacrosse team, falling to No. 2 Mercy University in the East Coast Conference Championship Semifinals.
The Saints (7-10) were led offensively by
Sam Newlin (Austin, Texas) with two points (1 goal, 1 assist) with
Sydney Gordon (Hamburg, N.Y.) and
Madison Buck (Rochester, N.Y.) each scoring a goal.
The defense was led by goalkeeper
Brinn Stworzydlak (Hamburg, N.Y.) grabbed six groundballs while
Sophia Conzone (Syracuse, N.Y.) and
Addison Moore (Lancaster, N.Y.) each grabbed three groundballs. Moore led the team in caused turnovers with three.
The Mavs got on the board first but Buck scored the equalizer at the 9:12 mark of the first quarter off the feed from Newlin to draw even at 1-1. Mercy added two more goals in the first to lead 3-1.
Mercy pushed their lead to four in the early goings of the second quarter but a goal by Gordon made it 5-2 with 10:36 left before halftime. The Mavs tacked on two more goals to take a 7-2 lead into the break.
Out of the break, the Mavs scored one goal at the halfway mark of the third quarter but a goal by Newlin off the assist from
Madison Handley (Lancaster, N.Y.) made it a 8-3 game with 4:20 left in the quarter. Mercy added one more goal in the frame to make it 9-3.
Stworzydlak went the distance in net, making 16 saves and eclipsed the 500-save mark in her career.
